Just wondering if anyone had any experience with trailer modification. I bought a Mac. trailer for a 26x(centerboard) and want to convert this to move a Catalina 27. The trailer is only rated for 3860lbs. so an additional axle is the obvious starting point. The problem is the hull supports. After searching the net and contacting several trailer places, it seems that traditional boat stands are not recomended even if welded to the trailer. Many of the trailer places offered to accept my trade in for a custom trailer, but too much money. Any advice?

what would I expect to pay?

Thanks for the advice. What did your trailer cost?

Too much,

Mine was built by a large welding company (the only outfit in my area)that specialized in oilfield work, the cost went up because it was a small job that utilized skilled welders that could have been employed on more lucrative (oilfield) projects. If built today, I would guess at between $6500 and $7500 Cdn. I have it listed in this website's classified adds for 3500 Cdn.

Too much

That is alot. I have spoken with a trailer company in Texas that will take the mac trade and about $2000 for a refurbished Cat 27 trailer, which seems about as good as it gets. I went from a Venture 21 (too small), to a Steel 46'(too big, but an unpassable deal), and grew up on my Dad's Easterly 38. The mid 70's Cat 27 seems to be what I need, however after Katrina, there aren't many around that are either in the price range that I am looking in, or not needing extensive work, hence the need for a trailer.
