Convoluted Thinking

Hey Caleb, I meant to tell you too that I used to live in Manhattan. Great experience living in that City. Loved it. Hmmmm. I know a lot of people but I don't really have a lot of "friends" and especially ones particularly interested in sailing, which is why I wanted to know about single handling them. So that may be a problem. I'm not really "worried" about ramp launches so much as thinking it should be taken into consideration. See I agree with you about the many sailing areas here and I'd planned on doing most of my sailing on the Potomac in the beginning which is very close to my home. And as it flows south of Washington it broadens out magnificently and would be perfect to hone my skills on. But then I'd like to eventually move up to the Chesapeake Bay which is only about 20 miles away and that's why I wanted the fixed keel although I've heard it's relatively shallow. Ahhhh, good questions. Yeah, I have a home but there's a 10 - 15 degree - maybe 20 degree - slope on the side and then it levels off for about 20 or so feet; this is where I'd planned on keeping my boat. I mention the slope because this guy told me that if I parked a boat down there I'd never be able to get it up. I think I could. I already know my Hyundai 4 cyl Sante Fe SUV can't haul over 1200 lbs so why bother? Well I'm tossing out ideas here on this forum to give people the opportunity to do what most people enjoy doing: giving their opinion. And if it sounds plausible, I'll give it a shake. Some convoluted thinking huh?

great chioce3

I am no professor all I spoke about is what I have learned since buying a boat and just sailing. Adventures happen when the lines to the dock are released. What I wrote made even me feel a pompus ass. Your wife or girlfriend my or not like this but what ever boat you decide on remember this, Sailing your own boat is like a really bad realationship It's costly in time, money and emotions but when she's wet and you are riding her it all seems worth while! I hope I didn't offend you, sailing is serious, you are responsible for your crew, and others on the waters you sail, that said I stick with the prior sentence. good luck and I hope soon happy sailing.

A Frame setup

"Other shortcuts involve a gin pole and A frame setup for stepping/unstepping the mast." Hmmmm. I did a search and found a few (2) things but is there any more information you can give me about this construction? Thank you.

Stepping a mast

I think I'd successfully figured out how to deflect most of the issues associated with owning a boat with the exception of the one raised by my friend in Yonkers CalebD: Stepping the mast by yourself. This is the only one that caused me to seriously consider dropping this whole idea of buying a boat because I know at the outset that generally, there will be little chance that I'll have a crew. (Yeah yeah, I know I've announced it to the world that *box I'm allllll alone in this big ole mean world and I have no friends!!!n YEAH!!!! I'm an outcast!!!! I'm forced to walk alone!!!! *cry) *x Hmmm. *sry Sorry about that. Forgot where I was. ;D But seriously, I can foresee that there are times when you'd have to be able to improvise if you don't want your sailing to be controlled by whether or not you have a crew, so with that in mind I did some searching on the net and have some links that may be of interest to you whether or not you have a crew: http://www.hereintown.net/%7ejsiehler/Stepping/Stepping.html http://www.boatus.com/goodoldboat/maststepping.asp http://www.capehorn.com/sections/M%E2tage/mast_stepping_system.htm http://www.sailingtexas.com/Movies/Macgregor26Me/macgregor26me.html http://usaj22.hypermart.net/blog/?p=46 http://www.geocities.com/lugerboats/morris/stepping/ EXCELLENT DIAGRAM !!!!!! http://home.att.net/~jameslhall/stepping/Stepping.htm
