Considering a Vega 27'

Hi everyone,

My wife and I have spent a good part of the season looking at
various boats that we feel will suit our needs for the next few
years and possibly more. We sold our 1975 Sabre 28'MK1 two seasons
ago and truly miss being out ont he water.

Our family is growing, but we want to keep our costs down and time
and enjoyment on the water "up"! A big boat would be great, but with
that (as we all know) comes bigger yard fees, bigger sails, winches,
etc... We have a 2.5 year old and a new one on the way in December.
I also have a 13 year old that visits on the weekends. I am looking
to do daysails, overnights and occassional extended coastal cruising
(probably just with my son or with my wife only). My questions to
the group are as follows:

1. would you recommend the Vega for such sailing (Northern New
England Coast)
2. Some things to watch out for with these boats
3. Some impressive qualities that would make this boat a sure thing!

Any and all comments and recommendations are more than welcomed!
Thank you everyone and hope to see you out there next season!

Hi Chris,

Where in Northern New England are you located? My husband, Paul and I, live
near Bangor, Maine. We just hauled "Double Fantasy" for the season--she is
parked in our driveway, and you are welcome to look at her before we get the
winter cover on. We have owned her since 1984, lived on her for over 4
years, sailing her up and down the eastern seaboard, west coast of Florida, and to
the Bahamas twice. The Vega has a proven track regard with many ocean
crossings to her credit. On this website you can find out just about everything
you need to know about the Vega. The US and overseas Vega groups are always
willing to provide help and encouragement. You can pick up a sound Vega at a
reasonable price these days.

Smooth Sailing,

We have had journeyman for 7 years and we sail in Maine. We have 3 kids, now 12, 13 and 15. She has worked out really well for us. Most of our sailing is long daysails, but each year we cruise for a week or 2. However, we no longer cruise with all 5: 3, maybe 4, not all 5. Boat is just too tight for that. I think about a bigger boat but the Vega is a joy to own, inexpensive, sails pretty well and allows us some cruising. She is a really fine daysailer, with the cabin for getting out of the sun or wind, taking a nap, etc.

Hi Melanie!

We are in North Conway, New Hampshire. We plan to keep the boat in
South Portland. We have considered bigger boats..Pearson 35', Bristol
30, Irwin 34' and a few snaller Pearsons and Cape Dory's but I kind of
like the smaller vessels...certainly when it comes down to upkeep and
maintenance. I would love to see the boat...but not sure when I could
get up your way...you truly are in "Northern" New England.

I may pick your brain about the Vega if that would be OK?

Would love to talk with you Nicholas...and you are in the area which
is nice. I am in North COnway, NH...about an hour and 20 minutes I
think it takes us. Where do you keep Journeyman?

What is she powered with Nicholas?

Aloha e komo mai Chris,

Lots of information on the American Vega Association web site
I've had my Vega for going on seventeen years. Lived aboard from day
one and cruised the Hawaiian islands.
We're planning to go to Moloka'i and Lana'i for Thanksgiving weekend.
Obviously, I think very highly of the Vega.

Great talking with you last night Nico!

Will you be up at the boat on Sunday per chance?
Sounds like Saturday is going to be a tad "breezy"!!
Especially on the coast! Would love to take a look at
your boat if that is OK? Still not 100% positive what
we are doing, but if you are going to be up there
anyway...I may take a trip up.
