Connection of Main Sheet to Sole attachment point

Good afternoon!
I'm rigging a new-to-me Tanzer 22. My question is; "what fittings are required to attach the cleat-end of the Main Sheet assemble to the post (with hole) in the sole of the boat"?

I've attached a file of the Mainsheet block (with cleat). the Post in the sole is about 1.25 inches tall .25 in diameter and has a hole through it.

Sorry I never took a picture of the post.

Does the post rotate or is it fixed. If it rotates, then a D shackle should work.

The post is where a swivel should be mounted.

If the post is solid you will want a connector that swivels.

An eye swivel with tow shackles. One to connect to the becket and one to connect to the post

At least for the Tanzer 22 there was a very active Class Association and newsletter full of tips. The glossy mags, Sail, Cruising World, etc had more information and fewer articles promoting the latest charter destination. Practical Sailor was a publication worth reading.

Talk to people that were involved in boating/made a lot of mistakes (not sure this has improved)/figured stuff out by doing...

Not in any way insinuating it was better before. It's way better today. But you do have to sift a lot of wheat from the chafe....

Is this what your cockpit looks like?

I am a bit uncertain. You are looking for a way "to attach the cleat-end of the Main Sheet assembly to the post (with hole) in the sole of the boat".

I have seen a couple of Tanzer 22's. They either have a cross the cockpit traveler rig or a center cockpit deck post.

Assuming you have a rig like the first image, is there a metal ring on the deck?
Something like this?


Yours may look different, but it functions the same. It is a solid connection to the deck. It needs to have a strong backing plate beneath the deck to spread the load out over the cockpit fiberglass deck (floor).

Then all you need is a strong connection from the mainsheet block to the deck.
A shackle, a soft shackle, or a snap shackle can all be used.
@garymalmgren shows in message #5 a variety of snap shackles. They connect to the mainsheet block and allow you to snap onto the deck padeye.
A nice shackle will also work.

Or if you like lightweight, you can use a 1/4 dyneema soft shackle.

I was at my boat yesterday and after reading your thoughts my perspective changed. It turns out that the post (more like a pin) on the sole of the cockpit swivels and all that I needed is a couple of D-shackles, which I found at the bottom of the bag the mainsheet was stored in. One d-shackle for the sole and a second for the boom.

Woo Hoo! problem solved.
