To question or not to question

Next time you have the occasion, just say thanks to the appropriate "being" that you looked at the heater and discovered the container. He will hear.

Give me a break

This thread isn't about a superior being. Its about being diligent and keeping your eye on the bouncing ball. We live in a hectic world and if you are not multi-tasking, you are behind the times. Unfortunately(for some) I for one am behind times. I do one thing at a time. As for thanking anyone, for anything, thats up to that individual. Humble pie tastes sweet. This is not a religious thread, it's a diligence thread. Be aware and observant and know what you are doing. Putting a flammable container in a compartment with a heater, is not a wise move. No matter how well secured, in my opinion. Some folks learn by experience and others learn by others experiences. I learned how not to ride a motorcycle by observing my older brother ride his. Just as Gary wanted to teach us by his experience. Thank you. I moved my boat to another slip last week and observed some badly warn shackles. So I looked at other boats and saw worn shackles also. I alerted the individual who is in charge of docks and also placed an "alert" in the newsletter, telling others of this possible dangerous situation. Just being a concerned boater, which I believe Gary was being by telling us his story. I'll dock along side Gary anytime. Knowing he is a concerned slip mate. Thanks buddy Keep it up, Ctskip Please lets move the "GOD" talk to the proper forum. Thanks

Self Inspection or other inspection

I know I become complacent about some things that others might find dangerous. I think that I will try to schedule a complimentary inspection by the coast guard auxilliary. They may see things that are dangerous that I have missed or become acustomed to seeing. I'm sure they would have pointed out to Garry that flamable liquids in plastic containers should not be stored near sources of heat. I am afraid of gasoline!!! Since I usually row my dinghy and only have gasoline onboard when taking a long trip. Even in my garage at home I worry about gasoline for the lawn mower and in hot weather raise the garage door an inch or so to help disperse any fumes. I also store my safety flares in an old ammo can. It is metal and airtight. Hopefully the flares are less of a fire hazard in such a container. I bought the can for under $10 at an army surplus store. You can't worry about everything all of the time or sailing just becomes not fun. I try to touch most of the bases most of the time and then enjoy sailing.

It was just luck/YOU LOOKED

to say that the gods kept you safe is just a superstitious irrational response to make you feel better , special, and more important. While "he" saved your boat from blowing up "he" killed millions in car accidents, freak occurances, famine, and disease. Wake up and smell the irrational egotistical bullshit!

Your odds are biased, incomplete and wrong Bill

for one...you neglected the ridiculous odds on how "your" god got here. The puddle of goo odds are close to a sure bet compared to some silly myths of god or gods!

Bad luck or ******* deity...

There are millions of examples of good christians succombing to accidental mis-fortunes. A very good friend of mine has a wife who is dying of lymphoma...bith christians. I will never understand how otherwise smart people can get stupidly superstitious.....must be the human brains ego and ability to rationalize for personal comfort.... http://www.nzherald.co.nz/section/2/story.cfm?c_id=2&ObjectID=10378874

Luck

Luck is when a novice accidently avoids a tragedy. Intuition (or preparedness if you prefer) is when a diligent, experienced sailor 'happens' across a situation before it becomes a tragedy and corrects it. If you've been at something long enough then you know that troubles don't come in singletons ('one off' seems to be a phrase growing in popularity). It seems the fussy furnace put Gary on the alert and into problem detection mode. On the other hand, how many times have you (or Gary) gone on alert only to find that no tragedies were imminent? There is no mystery here, only probabilities. Although I suppose that subject matter can seem mysterious too! If you need god, then let god act through luck and intuition. No argument necessary.

What??? Gary makes a mildly

religious reference and mentions the "sailing gods" and we're off on a god rant. Please take your fundamentalist/humanist arguments elsewhere! I have opinions on these subjects, but I don't shove them down other people's throats where no one has asked for them.

I simply replied to several irrational post's...

as is my right to REPLY to post's submitted. They are not shoved down your throat fred, you click them into your brain via your own volition. If you are going to thank god, then you MUST blame him as well!

hmmmmmm,

I'm trying real hard to find a post here that embodies the love which Christ calls us to live. Rich, I respect the fact that you have a differing opinion than mine, however, you appear to be guilty of the faith lobbying you protest, yours is a faith of universal happenstance. I also reserve the right to share my faith when and where I feel it is appropriate. If you try to keep me from doing so, then you are supposing that your "faith" is superior to mine, a stance which almost always "evolves" from ones need to self validate, rather than true conviction. let's move on, shall we?

Why can't we all just thank Gary?

If you believe in God, you can thank him in private for whatever blessings/good luck you may have stumbled on. If you don't believe - that's fine, too. As for Gary, he just wanted to remind us to protect ourselves and our families. So: Thank you, Gary. I can't speak for any other sailor, but I appreciated your story and will be inspecting my boat one more time before my wife and daughter go sailing with me again. Rich, take a valium or three. You're gonna give yourself a stroke with that attitude. You know what, I tried not to type this because it's gonna get Rich stirred up again, but what the hell: "God helps those who help themselves." :)

thank you Gary (and you too Ben)

Gary, I apologize for neglecting the point that this WAS your post. Your friendly, good-natured advice is appreciated. Ben, thanks for the clarity.

I am soooo sorrrrrrrrrry!!!!

I know that I am a baaaaaaad boy, but I literally just got this in an email from my cousin, timing was...shall we say...serendipitous.... and while rothflmao, I just can't help myself. Phil...do what you gotta do...but I'd burst if I don't post this... Again...sorry...don't read this...tree falling in the woods and all that... > An atheist was walking through the woods. > > He said to himself.... > > "What majestic trees!" > > "What powerful rivers!" > > "What beautiful animals!" > > As he was walking alongside the river, he heard a rustling in the bushes > behind him. He turned to look. He saw a 7 foot grizzly charge towards him. > He ran as fast as he could up the path. He looked over his shoulder & saw > that the bear was closing in on him. > > He looked over his shoulder again, & the bear was even closer. > He tripped & fell on the ground. He rolled over to pick himself up but saw > that the bear > was right on top of him, reaching for him with his left paw & raising his > right paw to strike him. > that instant the Atheist cried out, "Oh my God!" > > Time Stopped. > The bear froze. > The forest was silent! > > As a bright light shone upon the man, a voice came out of the sky. "You > deny my existence for all these years, teach others I don't exist and even > credit creation to cosmic accident." "Do you expect me to help you out of > this predicament? Am I to count you as a believer?" > > The atheist looked directly into the light, "It would be hypocritical of me > to suddenly ask You to treat me as a Christian now, but perhaps You could > make the BEAR a Christian?" > > "Very Well," said the voice. > > The light went out. The sounds of the forest resumed. And the bear dropped > his right paw, brought both paws together, bowed his head & spoke: > "Lord bless this food, which I am about to receive from thy bounty through > Christ our Lord, Amen."

Ticked Off

I just want you to know I recommended to Phil that this thread be moved to the Sails Call Lounge. That's damned unfortunate. There's a valuable message in this thread that has nothing to do with religion. I'm a firm believer in each person's right to his own view on religion--just don't do it on a thread that is meeting the purpose of this web site. If you want to debate religion, do a new posting in the Sails Call Lounge and leave the primary web site to it's intended purpose. Gary Wyngarden S/V Wanderlust h37.5
