All-u-get, check this out next time you're in Portland.
Concrete docks-properly installed, are fantastic! We're at Maine Yacht center in Portland and our outer dock is a floating concrete dock imported from the North Sea and it's withstood winters and Nor'easters without any damage. As has been pointed out, the dock is surrounded in wood and bumpers so the boats never touch the concrete. Even in a major blow, it's like a millpond inside the dock. This dock is free floating, held in place by huge navy anchors, not posts

My marina is being changed over to concrete docks and that is good but I will miss being able to paint anchor chain and other messy things on the new docks..

I found out first hand ...

how easily gel coat is crushed when I barely nudged my bow into a concrete pier on our lake (right between 2 nice big tires, Ross) . I also found out that a nail that was used to fasten one of those flimsy rubber bumpers to a wooden dock will also leave a nasty gouge! I hate to say it but my boat has more than a few scars from my momentary lapses around docks. The problem that we have is that the great majority of docks have narrow beams and I sometimes can't even get into a dock when I have my fenders out with our beam which is just under 10'.

Blitz ... speaking of bridges, I drove over that new bridge going over the Shrewsbury just last week for the first time. That should make things a lot more convenient for sailors who are docked up the river!

It's the end of March and right now I'd settle for any dock, pier or flotsam that was anyplace close to ramp and big enough to stand on!

There was a plan to build a floating marina nearby. I ended up with a couple of the architectural prints a while ago. The "docks" were huge, hollow and concrete. But, I'm not sure how much ice Casco bay actually sees.

Hi Chuckwayne,
Is that where DeMillo's is? I can never see it from the water because those 160 footers are in the way. Boy they had some big ones in there last summer. Next time I stop in $3 Deweys I'll take a walk. Thanks.

HI, All u get,
no, Maine Yacht center is on the north side of Portland by back cove, right below the B&M baked beans plant. It's just outside of the harbor bustle so we don't get all the traffic jams...
