I have a Gemini Compass mounted on my stearing pedastal and found it nearly out of fluid this weekend. I have taken the compass off the boat and am wondering where I might have it repaired? Is is worth it to repair or should I just consider replacing it? Any suggestions? Thanks, Kenneth P.S. The sailing this weekend was absolutely wonderful!!

Compass Repair or Replace

Kenneth, I went down the same road five or six years ago. By the time I paid shipping from Louisville, KY to Chicago, IL and back and paid for the repairs I was close to the price of a new one. The Baton Rouge/New Orleans area is a major water oriented shipping area so there may be repair shops closer to you.

Repair

The guys at my local West Marine gave me the address of a guy in Pensacola that rebuilds compasses. For 90 dollars he replaced the movement, the card, and replaced the fluid. It sure beat the 400 dollar replacement cost! Talk to your marine store guys or some local surveyors. If nothing turns up I can track down the info on the "Compass Guy" Tim

Rule

Send it in to Rule industries. They will charge you about $60 and return what will appear to be a new compass.

have a link for rule?

My Gemini compass still has the liquid in it, but the glass 'lense' is so fogged and scratched that I can barely see the numbers on it!! If you have a link or info on how to get ahold of Rule Industries, I'd appreciate it as my compass could use refurbishment also!! Thanks.. Jim
