my wife and I and of course our Hunter 36-SamiDog are departing Boyne City tomorrow -destination-Canada's pristine North Channel. We plan to stop at the straits and maybe the Les Cheneaux Islands. Any sailors going that route.....we could sure tag along. We have the summer and are totally flexible. Maybe Sault Ste. Marie could be a temporary diversion......msg us here.

You make it sound extremely attractive as a sailing destination. Now I've got googling galore in front of me.

at first your gps will take you right down the canadian small boat channel. it real safe. then as you get more comfortable you can start snooping around the less traveled places.
youe going to love it.

most of all, you will meet people up there and see them from time to time

its all good

the canadian gov has a small boat channel that weives throughout the entire georgean bay and north channel that a newbie will find very reassuring.
there are green slopes everywhere
there are blue slopes into the wild and unknown
there are black slopes for the adventurous
there are double diamond slopes for me and jackdaw and capta
it is a spectacular summer sailing location.

just dont tell anyone :)

An absolutely "must see" destination for all cruising sailors! You will not regret it!

You might be able to link up with the trailer sailors later in the month of July...

OK so now i'll give you a mission. go find the plaque in the wilderness that shows where Champlain declared that he had found the inland seas. very cool

hint: there is a 4 story all cedar hotel on an isl in the middle of the wilderness from like 1905. near by. he he he

take an extra 100 ft rope to spider web yourself in to some micro bays.

we used to make the kids swim with the ropes in their mouths to shore and tie a bowlines around trees just to insite their huckleberry fin.

when you are at the benjamins, and you will want to go there. walk over to inspect in entrance from the west side into the harbor. think of me as the kids and i sailed through there, the west entrance, on a blustery day, under sail.

oh yeah baby!

And if needed there is a 40 ton boat lift just up river from Spanish. Comes in handy if your boat springs a leak.

Would you keep quiet before I have to lock this thread..... ;) :D keep telling people and they will come.....

You forgot to mention the mosquitos the size of bats, deer flies that are as big as deer and don't forget bears can swim and love to check out your fridge and cooler, keel biting rocks that lurk just below the water waiting to pounce ..... ;) :D :D :D

2 weekends ago we were anchored out at a fair size island and watched a black bear roaming along the shoreline checking for left overs from campers. ( this is the true part) We're just south of Pointe au Baril.

Might be a tight couple of weeks to find dockage around Mackinac island,Mackinaw City, and St Ignace. these are Mac Race weeks, and there will be hundreds of racing boats looking for parking. Fun time to be there, but there is some serious partying going on.
Chicago to Mackinac starts july 15, Port Huron to Mackinac starts July 22.

i have a friend out of milwaukee that spent 30 years of his life cruising all over the globe on his 50' alden sailboat. now in his 90's and having been to all the great cruising spots we all hear and read of i asked him where his favorite place to sail is. his answer was the north channel / georgian bay.

i have so many fond memories of spending many summers sailing all over up there. its a sailors heaven. very nice for motor boaters too.
