Finally getting some headway with some of my projects. TodayI designed a screen door that will slip into my companionway. I only have the four slats that come with the 260 and I wanted something that I can use at night that will keep the cabin cool and also keep the bugs out. I decided to personalize it a bit by adding my boats logo into the center of it. This also act as a support for handles that will be added for moving it in and out. This will easily be able to slip into the existing grooves in the companionway for easy access.
I designed it using Aspire 3.5. I programed the g-codes and sent that file to my cnc router. I used the cnc router to machine an o-ring groove that will accept a screen similar to a normal house window or screen door. Its held in place with a rubber gasket (?) material which I purchased, with the screen, at Home Depot. My router has a vacuum table which holds the material down with suction, so no need for clamping. I decided to use 1/4" aluminum for the material of the screen door. It is light, yet strong or ridgid enough to hold its shape. The o-ring groove was machined on the back side of the screen door so it will be facing the inside of the boat. I then took my program and material over to the water jet and cut out the screen door shape itself with the logo. I will be doing some finishing to the aluminun so those blue letters you see on the back side will be gone. I will be installing the screening this weekend. As far as storrage goes, it will fit neatly into the locker at the back of the head.
Well thats a good start for my first mod. Total time taken so far is about four hours today. We'll see how the weekend goes. As most mod, I looked at various ways to do this, but I think this one will best suite my needs. I have some more ideas for a removable plexi door for those bright afternoons. I will have clear and tinted plexi that will easily be interchangable with a snap in and out of machined pocket and being held in place with rare earths. This way I will be able to switch from clear to tinted very easily depending on my needs at the time. I also want to incorporate rare earths for my window curtain design in the cabin. More on this later. Lots on the go...I would love to hear what you guys/gals think and if you have any ideas on how to improve on the design.
For some reason my pictures are not uploading?? I will work on it and post once I figure it out...any tips???
