Finally getting some headway with some of my projects. TodayI designed a screen door that will slip into my companionway. I only have the four slats that come with the 260 and I wanted something that I can use at night that will keep the cabin cool and also keep the bugs out. I decided to personalize it a bit by adding my boats logo into the center of it. This also act as a support for handles that will be added for moving it in and out. This will easily be able to slip into the existing grooves in the companionway for easy access.

I designed it using Aspire 3.5. I programed the g-codes and sent that file to my cnc router. I used the cnc router to machine an o-ring groove that will accept a screen similar to a normal house window or screen door. Its held in place with a rubber gasket (?) material which I purchased, with the screen, at Home Depot. My router has a vacuum table which holds the material down with suction, so no need for clamping. I decided to use 1/4" aluminum for the material of the screen door. It is light, yet strong or ridgid enough to hold its shape. The o-ring groove was machined on the back side of the screen door so it will be facing the inside of the boat. I then took my program and material over to the water jet and cut out the screen door shape itself with the logo. I will be doing some finishing to the aluminun so those blue letters you see on the back side will be gone. I will be installing the screening this weekend. As far as storrage goes, it will fit neatly into the locker at the back of the head.

Well thats a good start for my first mod. Total time taken so far is about four hours today. We'll see how the weekend goes. As most mod, I looked at various ways to do this, but I think this one will best suite my needs. I have some more ideas for a removable plexi door for those bright afternoons. I will have clear and tinted plexi that will easily be interchangable with a snap in and out of machined pocket and being held in place with rare earths. This way I will be able to switch from clear to tinted very easily depending on my needs at the time. I also want to incorporate rare earths for my window curtain design in the cabin. More on this later. Lots on the go...I would love to hear what you guys/gals think and if you have any ideas on how to improve on the design.

For some reason my pictures are not uploading?? I will work on it and post once I figure it out...any tips???

Yes Doug, I'm very fortunate. I've just learned how to run this CNC equipment. I've always used maual machines so this is very cool being able to design and machine things that are artistic and in short order. My buddy has a 22 Tanzier that i engraved his boats logo 'The Grizz" into the step in front of his companionway. It looks really good.

I wish I could post pics. I can't seem to be able upload any. I'm thinking that they are too large. Does anyone know how to resize a pic?

I took a picture with a different camera and it worked. Not sure what is going on but unfortunately I can't show the router or water jet pictures.

The first pic is the front of the screen door. 1/4" aluminum is the material. The lines you see are from a red sharpie marker that will come off when I finnish it off. The second pic is a close up of the o-ring groove on the back side of the door. This is where the screen will be secured. The lettering on the back side is just from the aluminum manufacturer and will come off when I texture the aluminum.

I still need to buff the finnish, deburr the o-ring groove, install the screen, handles and soften some of the edges. It's nice out today so I'll go out and do a test fit as well. I really like it. It's personalised, light and easiy to handle. I will post pics when I'm done.

This was really fun to do and has me thinking of other projects. I will be doing a table mod for the cabin, machine a folding cockpit table out of UHMW or the like, a pivoting bracket for my solar panel and an upgrade to my BBQ bracket.

Pretty cool stuff! You put my wooden frame slide-in screen to shame! Very nice work.

They're both excellent. That said, got an extra one that fits an H23?

I like DJN51's designs. Good ideas and practical. Very nice work.

Dougo, my first design was this exact one but out of wood. I decided against the wood frame because of the extra work with the initial preparation of the wood and down the road with maintenance. I love the look of wood so I'm not sure why I was so easily swayed to go with aluminum. The only difference in the design would have been my logo. Instead of it being a cut out, like in the aluminum, it would have been engraved. The entire job would have been cut out on the CNC Router instead of the water jet. I'm thinking of engraving the logo on some of the interior cabin doors.

Isaksp00, is the companionway in a H23 the same size as a 260?

I'm now adventuring into UHMW or basically that white cutting board material. I'm trying to find out how well it stands up to the sun...does it fade, crack etc...

Shanker, I don't know if the 23 and 260 are the same size - but I was joking anyway :)

Wow, nice frame work and very cool CNC work. Our 260 came with a screen for the companionway made of window screen framing which simply drops into the slots and is stowed with clips on the aft bunk ceiling behind the head. Lightweight, inexpensive and fairly sturdy......just like me:)

Here is the completed screen door for my companionway. I opted for a mat finish. I thought that the aluminum would be a little too flashy for a boat. So I bead blasted the aluminum which gives it a softer look. With the black bug netting ($10 at Home Depot) it's OK.

That was a fun one. One down and .....

Hi Shanker! Good job, this was really very nice looking screen door. I have wooden screen doors which protecting the main door. All the screen doors used to allow for bug free ventilation. It will help you feel safer and more comfortable in home, and that feeling of comfort and security outweighs a slight downgrade in terms of aesthetic appeal, then it is worth considering a storm or screen door today.

Duecer, I can make some up for you. Do you have a logo or boat name so I could personalize them for you? That turtle is my boats logo. Send me a picture or whatever you would like in the center rib and I will draw it up. If you like what I come up with we'll get to work. (.jpg or .dxf would be best). What year is your Hunter? Mine is a 2001, would your opening dimensions be the same as my 2001? If you want just a straight rib across it, I can do that also...use your imagination and email me your ideas.

I am on a time cruch for using the the CNC router and water jet, so your timing is perfect. Let me know asap if you want to pursue this.

Excellent work indeed; Shanker...You've added ideas to my second-to-next item on my "to go overnighting work list" for my 'project' salvage H22. THANK YOU.

My "to sail work list" for this season is nearly completed after a lightning strike in previous season. :-{
