My 1993 H23.5 Question...I have a snap on green cloth cover that can be placed over the companionway opening. I asummed this was water proof, another novice mistake, and found my new boat had water standing on cabin sole about two inches deep.
The only logical place for it to have entered was through the wood slats for cabin access, or from the glass side hatch top....both are covered by this green cloth that snaps over the entire thing.
The question is there a "water proof" coating that I can use to solve my rain water leaking problem.I am hopping there is some kind of spary on waterproofing or maybe paint on coating.I can put on this green cotton cloth fabric?.......please advise friends.
I had about a half a small trash can full of water the last rain..not good.
Txs in advance for your input guys...fairwinds mark<><

What kind of boat?

Mark - on my H23 the slider above the companion way leaks. What happens is that rain flows or gets blown forward, hits the teak stop, squeezes between the teak and the plexiglass and drips into the boat. I actually leave a bucket on the port settee to catch it. Before next year I am going to try and get something to seal or block flow between the teak and plexiglass. If that works, water should hit the stop and flow to the channel drain as it was originally designed. Even at it's worst, I never got the amount of water you are describing. Check other possible sources like anchor locker or cockpit drain hoses (both of mine were in bad shape when I bought the boat).

try re caulking the teak strip, spraying the cover with water repellant and adding a swim noodle under the cover along the centerline. This will create a tent effect and drain ponding water off the cover.

Mark:

Place a piece of something to raise the center of the cover so water cannot pool on the cover. This could be a piece of PVC or ABS plastic pipe that will raise the cover to prevent any water from pooling in the canvas.

For waterproofing canvas we use CampDry, available at most sporting goods stores. Two coats and water beads up on canvas all season long.

leaky sliding hatch fix

i always had water coming in the cabin during rainstorms it was leaking in where the plexiglass slider meets the track i used adhesive velcro from home depot the 3/4 inch stuff fits perfect i simply opened the slider and proped it open on its legs then put the velcro (fuzzy side) on the companyonway slider track i put it all the way on both sides so when i lowered the hatch it rested on top of the velcro now it is much easier to slide back and forth and it poured this weekend and not a drop inside the cabin

Carl, It sounds like a heck of a good idea!

I'll try it tomorrow morning as that was the next project. It rained like hell the last week and I've found every leak. Your repair will help the largest problem. If I understand what you said then I will put the soft side of the velcro on the tract? Did you apply any type of lubricant? I also assume that this was done dry. It is supposed to rain tomorrow afternoon so we shall see. Thanks for the posting. Ray S/V Speedy

WOW! Yet another use for Velcro

Great idea Carl! How about going one step further? If you rub a bit of dry teflon lube into the 'fuzz', the hatch will slide even easier! I'm stoppin' by the Depot on my way out tomorrow!
