Come on now, I know some of you 28's out there are having some minor difficulties. Come on, admit it and print it. And Hey, if you just have something nice to say, do it. Mine, I just finished tuning the standing rigging and she sails like the dream she is. Even with a shoal draft. Come on 28's. Let's get some correspondence going. Sincerely, Wind Rose and Kevin

No problems here

My 28 doesn't have many problems. Once I adjusted the line to the rolling furler, tuned the rig, replaced the fixed 3 blade with a folding prop, adjusted compass and knot meter. We went from the bottom of the pack to routinely finishing first. It's a great boat once you finally get everything tuned (which *should* have happened at commissioning). We're starting to race now with a symmetrical spinnaker. It's taken a fair amount of work to rig it. See www.planetopus.com for more details on this racing beast.

See my prior post

Kevin: I responded to Larry Dean's 7/11 post "Need advise on purchasing a Catalina 28" with some comments on the 1994 Catalina 28' which I purchased about a year ago. If you go to "Boat Reviews" on this website under 28' MK II tall rig, you can pull up Larry's post and my response.

Troubles?

After owning Amazing Grace C-28 # 353 for over 6 years I have very little to report in the way of troubles. For the first 6 years she was sailed hard in the Pacific Ocean out of Winchester Bay Oregon. We now her moored on the Columbia River and are using her every opportunity. The only actual problems I have had were electrical. Both were due to incorrect wiring when the boat was built. The two opening ports leaked since day one. Last year I replaced the gasket material and dry ports. I am starting to have trouble with the macerator, however I talked to the manufacture and they told me NEVER use marine TP in the head. Use only house hold type single ply. The marine type apparently turns to threads and can jam the macerator. The shower curtains are not the sturdiest. Of course we use ours all the time and have spent nearly 500 nights aboard. Anyway I was shocked when Catalina told me they will sell me a new set for $150.00. We love this boat and still do not have 2 foot itus!

Question for Terry Jack

Terry: Where did you get replacement gaskets for opening ports? Thanks.

Answer for Bob

Sorry to be so long in replying. If you have Bomar Nibo 12"x5" (cut out is 6"x13") ports call 1-603-826-5791. I believe the part number is 567745 model p100-55,10' per port. It is easy to install. Comes with the adhesive on it. Remove the old gasket and clean really good with alcohol. then just peal the paper off and stick it on. Once I had installed mine, I did not open for several day to allow the material to take a set to the shape. Bomar is very helpfully with info on installing the stuff. It seems to me the material to do 2 ports was about $30.00, incl shipping
