The best way that we found to make a cup of coffee

without the use of AC shore power was to heat water on our alcohol stove and use the tea bag style of coffee. Folgers is the only one that I have seen that offers that variety. Works great. Better brew than any instant coffee and we can thereby reduce dependance on our battery bank.

Fwiw...

If you just put hot water in the cup and then just dunk the coffee "tea bag" till the water turns brown--which is what most people do--the result is pretty awful...cuz all you really have is brown water. But if you'll use boiling water, not just hot...pour it over the bag in the cup and then cover the cup and let it steep for a couple of minutes, those bags actually make a pretty decent cup of coffee. You'll also get a much better cup of tea if you make tea that way too.

At home, we buy whole beans, and each morning we grind some beans and make coffee in a french press (Bodum). Yum.

Our boat is tiny, but we were not going to forego having good coffee when overnighting. My first acquisition for on-board coffee was the AeroPress, recommended by a friend as fantastic. The coffee it makes IS fantastic, btw... but overall it was just too fiddly and slow, even for the two of us.

So this year we followed the lead of some more experienced sailing friends and went the Melitta route. The filter holder we bought is a "camping" type with a silicone basket that folds flat for storage. It uses the #4 filter size.

We use a cheap kettle that nicely fits on our portable butane stove; water is usually boiled in 10 min or less. We often let the coffee drip directly into a Thermos - it keeps hotter longer.

Mistress, worked pretty darn good for me. The

instructions warn against not steeping it long enough and not going by color alone. I was patient, not always easy with the first cup of the morning, but it did make a respectable cup of coffee and without using batteries. We also would use a camping toaster on one of the burners for toast. Moored off Catalina Island in the morning, that's as much luxury as I could ask for.

Re: Fwiw...

The bags of coffee are filled with a mix of instant and ground coffee. the color you get is from the first 20 seconds and is the instant the flavor is from the ground coffee and that is what takes a little longer.

If you want a 12 volt coffee maker check at almost any truck stop. They have plain ones that generally work and are not expensive.

I have been using a thermal french press pot for years and wouldn't trade it for anything. As others have said, get good beans ground coarse. Put your coffee in the pot, bring water to a boil, pour over the beans and then give it a couple of stirs. Now, put the lid on, and push the press down until it is just in contact with the water. Let steep 5 minutes, push the plunger the rest of the way down, pour and enjoy! Well, at least that is how I make coffee when away from the marina. Since they installed the espresso bar at the ships store and Cynthia, my favorite barrista knows exactly how I like it, I usually make the trek from the dock to the clubhouse on mornings we are in the marina.

with shore power, an old Black and Decker that brews into a thermal carafe.. on the hook, an old French drip pot that makes something close to expresso. Luzianne dark Roast is my pre-ground coffee of choice, but Community will do in a pinch. No milk or sugar, just coffee!

Klaudi 1, dockside with shore power there is not a

problem with coffemaking. With shore power, we found that and electric skillet was especially handy on lazy dockside weekends, providing a more covienient way to hot meals dock side. It along side an A/C coffee maker and A/C toaster were stowed away before getting underway.
