In the Sound the radiomen apparently are engaged in a race. Enunciation is the first casualty in these announcements. However, since the announcement is rendered incomprehensible by the announcer - mariners become most vigilant everywhere in the sector.

So I guess - mission accomplished - because everyone everywhere has become more attentive.

I usually tune in to the Prescott coast guard (Canada) radio continuous marine broadcast on Lake Ontario. The weather synopsis, notices to shipping, securites, etc. are all enunciated clearly and carefully.

Very common.
The only saving grace in my experience is local knowledge which sometimes means I can make out what they are talking about. But then I have no real need to worry as they will then repeat the same message every 15 minutes for the rest of he day.

Prescott Coast Guard Radio have professional radio operators. The US Coast Guard does not use professional radio operators. For instance, it used to be that every time you heard feedback on channel 16, it was a sign that the CG was trying to make a broadcast and apparently didn't know how to turn down the volume on a nearby radio tuned to the same channel to eliminate the feedback.

I can't say about Prescott or training of USCG radiomen, but I have to admit that Roger's rendition is very often the rule. For one thing their broadcasts seem faint in comparison to other Channel 16 broadcasts. Maybe they broadcast from regional centers instead of local stations. Would that be a wise policy?

Has anyone else noticed how common this is?

What I find related to this is they will call attention to a hazard or boat in distress and just rapid fire read the lat long. It would be most helpful if they added "....approximately 2 miles southwest of Perkins Point...", or some land reference.

Pick up the Microphone, respond back to them on 21A and ask them to repeat the message and this time slowly and distinctly! Be firm but courteous.
They work for you/us; don't forget that.
They are kids... They mean well but they seldom know what it's like on the receive side.
Teach them... somebody has to.

You might simply want to ask for a repeat because you didn't hear the entire message, rather than point out that the first time wasn't 'slowly and distinctly'.

You'll catch more flies with honey than vinegar and the message will get across eventually.

I may be mistaken but 21A is restricted use specifically for the CG.

Don, that is the point. Specifically use 21A for this! We would not be Hailing the USCG. We are communicating with them by asking for them to communicate clearly with us.
It will get there attention!

They May Not be Monitoring 21A or 22A

They operate between boats and stations on a secure digital frequency.

Also many of those messages are recorded I was listening to one Friday night where the guy actually yawned in the middle of it.

Again, the point is not to let it go unquestioned. They always maintain a watch on 21A but that is not the point. Raise them on 16 if you feel better about that but raise them and ask/request/demand, we are into semantics here, a retransmission of the recent message containing the hazard to navigation. If they can not comply they have a problem.

I cannot agree more. Confirm the information.

One of my two remaining pet peeves.

The other one is: " Can I replace the flax in my stuffing box while the boat is in the water.":neutral::neutral:

Now Stu, it's all about perspective. The search feature is being used for that one, some just prefer to use Stusearch1.0 rather than vBulletin6.0...

Here in Southport, my general pastime being a little drug running, some guns on occasion, and when I'm bored I'll smuggle in some refugees. And around this military terminal they are subject to ask about anything, but they've never yet asked me about my shaft packing..:D:D

The last time I was boarded I was asked "if I had any weapons of mass destruction, aboard"; true story! :D My response was not today, and with a straight face I might add.

Oh a posting like that would get you some serious visitors here on the Niagara Frontier.....

My pet peeve was the transmissions every twenty minutes requesting a location fix from the patrol vessels or the CG Aux boats. Why didn't they just spend a couple of bucks for a modern radio which can be polled at will for that information? Now that I think about it I haven't heard any of that type of noise this season. Maybe the modernization of the radio system has finally hit the north coast.
