Clogged water intake

Hello again, During our exploration of bays and harbors along the foggy Maine coast in our 336, over a two week period, 6 times the water intake became clogged with kelp and other stuff. This has occurred only twice over the previous 3 years. I learned to be more careful and try to go around large kelp beds but this wasn't always possible and sometimes it was not a bed but a random clump that was sucked up. The clog occurs between the intake and the through hull. The Zodiac pump has become almost the most important piece of equipment on the boat. A few other times, the clog occurred in the hose between the through hull and strainer. And the strainer itself was checked and cleaned multiple times/day. I am wondering if there is such a thing as an external screen to put over the intake. Maybe a cone shaped screen device to block the stuff and maybe cause it to slide off and away. Or does anyone have any suggestions on how to keep the heavier floatsum out of the intake? thank you, Bob Pilgrim

No H2O

I had a 1995 29.5 with half inch thruhull water intake which got clogged all the time and usually at the worst possible time. I fixed it by putting a T- fitting on top of the thruhull. I put cap on top of T and ran the hose to the strainer from the middle opening of the T. When it clogged, I closed the thruhull, unscrewed the cap, opened the thruhull and ran a coat hanger right thru and cleared clog in about 30 seconds. Then close thruhull, screw cap back on, opened thruhull and away I went. Would not under any circumstances put a strainer on the outside of hull over thruhull opening. It tends to gather seaweed, grass and barnacles which will restrict water flow. Also a plastic bag will get sucked in part way. The only way to clear it out now is to dive over the side. Not good option. I now have a 1996 336 and have had no problem. It does have bigger thruhull. 3/4 inch I think. Good luck. Ken

Strainers

Groco makes a series of strainers and exterior baskets. The baskets help deflect "stuff" away from entering the seacock. www.groco.net Good luck Dave
