Our diesel fuel tank will soon be empty. No wind so we motor.
Is it a common practice to clean diesel fuel tanks? If so, what is done and can I do it myself?

Thanks

Ducati,

I cut an access hole in my tank. At the end of each season I drain the diesel, open the cover and wipe it clean with a little acetone on a cotton rag. I visually check inside just before re-commissioning in the spring.

Really depends on where you are. In Toronto we just haul the boat with a full tank of diesel at the end of the season. No need for stabilizer or anti-algae treatment. In Florida you have to treat your fuel with everything! I use Startron. Every few years I get the fuel polished and the tank cleaned out. If the boat is new to you it would not hurt to have the tank cleaned, then you know what you're dealing with. In the past I have removed aluminum fuel tanks and taken them to a rad shop for cleaning.

We have never cleaned our fuel tank on the last two boats. But if I had the chance to r/r the fuel tank I would dump the fuel and either have it steam cleaned or use a power washer.

If you do not have a clean out port it is a good time to install one (assuming the tank is in good shape). I would have it inspected to be sure that it will last another 10 years before you install the inspection plate.
