At anchor the electrical cables inside my 1985 Cat 30 tall rig mast make a considerable clanging noise. Has anyone experienced this? Any ideas on a quick, inexpensive fix? Family needs sleep. John

Fill the mast

By "quick", I presume you don't want to drop the mast. If you drop it, there are any number of ways that work well. Leaving it up, there are only a few I'm aware of. Easiest and cheapest is to go up in the bosun chair with your electric drill and a can of the squirt styrofoam type insulation. You can drill a hole large enough to get the tube of the foam can thru every so often up the mast, and squirt in the foam around the wires. Of course, DON'T DO THIS IF YOU HAVE INTERNAL HALYARDS!! Problems with this method include: 1. Hard to get the foam to go horizontally in the mast, rather than just dribble/dropping down the wall of the mast below the hole. It can be done though. 2. Now you've got to epoxy or otherwise fill the holes you've drilled in teh mast. 3. You're trying to drill the holes real close to the wires, but not thru the wires, yet you can't see thru the mast to see where the wires pass. 4. A real bear to clean the hardened foam out if you ever do need to drop the mast to re-wire or something else. Somebody at one time suggested filling the mast with styrofoam "peanuts". Don't know how you'd easily do that with the mast up though, unless you went to the top of the mast and drilled a hole large enough to feed the peanuts thru. This creates a large hole at the top, and you'd still have to feed the peanuts in one or two at a time, which would take a LONG time to fill the mast. My suggestion would be to drop the mast and do it the right way. Good luck!!

Do it right! or not at all

It would be wrong and more expensive, in the long run, to consider any method other then lowering the mast and installing an internal tube fastened to the mast with pop rivets made of the same material as the mast. This would correct the problem and give you a chance to inspect your whole rig. Think about it! Charlie
