Choosing an inverter

I have recently purchased a legend 37.5 and am interested in adding an inverter. Typical use would be to run a small microwave and perhaps a blender. There is an existing charger on board. Also how, or at whitch point, does the inverter get inserted into the AC circuitry on the boat? Any recommendations. Thanks, Brett

Inverter/Charger

The Heart Inverters take the place of your existing charger. They will have a built in charger as part of the unit. They will come with a wiring schematic. Basically, the A/C shore power goes directly to the Inverter input (Charger input)and then on to the A/C power panel. When the power is removed or fails, the inverter provides A/C power back out the input and directly to your A/C power panel. Only problem is that in the event of an A/C shore power failure, the Inverter will try to power all A/C units that are currently on line. This includes air conditioners, etc. Makes a racket before the breakers kick.

What I did

I added a 1000 watt inverter to my boat (31)it will run what you are wanting to do, I mounted mine under the sink in the galley and ran the 12v power through the engine room to the battery box, the connections to the batterys are the aligator type connections that came with the inverter, I did this because you cannot run the inverter while charging your batteries under shore power, as it will burn up the inverter (I have to make a decision to connect the inverter not the other way around) this greatly reduces the chance of "Frying" the unit. For the AC side I used a quality extention cord that runs from the inverter to the shore power connection, that when not in use hangs in the starbord locker. I did this because if you "hard Wire" the inverter to your 110 behind the panel and forget to disconect before connecting to shore power the inverter become an expencive paper weight. Check out the link below to get a 1000 watt inverter cheap,($153.00) WORKS GREAT!!

Wiring

I have Legend 37 which I added a 1000 watt inverter. My house battery bank is located starboard side just forward of the chart area. The D/C comes from there to power the inverter. The load side of the inverter then powers the A/C outlets on main A/C board of the boat. IMPORTANT you must isolate (ALL) the wiring of the outlets from the buss work of the boat. I left the circuit breakers working the outlets so I had to cut the buss bar to isolate them from the rest of the boat. Your Micowave should already be wired to the the outlets. Hope this helps you.

Conections...

Brett... Main thing is to have it connected in such a way that NEVER,by mistake, you may connect the inverter AND the shore power at the same time... If you care, I can send you a VERY simple schematic showing the way must to be done with a regular three way, double throw switch. Happy New Year Aldo alozano@monmouth.com

Thank You all for your replies

I thank you all for your input. It's great to have a forum such as this.

Auto Switch

One last item that I did on my boat... I picked up an auto-switch at an R/V supply that switches the AC automatically from shore to inverter( or genset). It only cost about $60, and will prevent the AC and inverter from both being on at the same time. While I KNEW that I would NEVER put my switches in the worng positions, there were others on the boat that might. The unit says that it is for use in marine as well as R/V, but it is rather bulky for boat space. However, if it fits on my 32', it should work for your 37'. Wiring diagram comes with the unit. Much cheaper than frying an inverter, and no worries after install.
