Cal 33

I purchased a 1988 Cal 33 three years ago and this has been a very comfortable and fast boat. The problems that we have had have been minor but should be considered when looking at this boat. 1. I have had some small areas of the deck delaminate. This is easily fixed but shoud be done carfully as the deck is balsa cored. 2. The hatches on our boat did leak when we first got the boat. I removed the hatches and found that the hatches are not installed with a sealant but rely on the rubber gasket for sealing. I reinstalled the hatches with sealant and I have not had any problems with leaks. 3. The ports should be replaced with units that self drain. Currently two of the four on my boat have been replaced with self draining ports. I plan on replacing the other two soon. 4. The port in the quarter berth is subject to leaks also. This port is installed by wood screws to a plywood piece that is glued to the inner hull. Check this carefully, if any leakage has occurred this plywood may be rotten. 5. Many of the thru hulls near the water line are plastic. When motoring or sailing several of these are below the water line. I will be replacing these with bronze next haul out. 6. The roller furling on ours is the Hood line drive unit. I would replace this with a single line furler. The line drive is not suitable for furling the jib in higher winds. Hood offers a exchange program for this unit. Overall this is a very good boat and I have sailed it offshore in winds of 30 knts. She performs well and we have enjoyed it very much. I look forward to hearing from Cal 33 owners. Ron Eddleman S/V Stellar of Course Kemah, texas
