First I've a newbie sailor, last May I took the ASA course, went out in July and bought a 16' American Fibergalss A-16 and sailed her just about every puddle close to me.
So, this new world is all alien to me, so, bear with me
Being your "A" typical male- sold her and bought a '71 PT 1/4 22', (I fell in love with her hull lines)!
She needs work, (what else is new? EVERYTHING I buy "needs TLC").
Sails being made, hull, deck sanded, new stays and sheets siting in the shop, the cabin (small by standards as I see now) is coming together in my head, all I need is warm weather to put her all back together.
I'll start sailing her in a local large fresh water lake close to me, (if the slip can be secured) and with the BIG truck I just bought to haul her @, travel to????? to try different waters. (My buddy has a cabin at the 1,000 islands and goes there each weekend to fish, so that's one of my "bucket lists places to sail).
She has NO wiring, so I have to start fresh.
A few questions.......................................
With my A-16, I just kept my "druggie phone" (A track phone I kept in my saddle bag of my motorcycle when I travleled) in case Jaws came after me or a Mermaid suduced me and I needed to tell my wife, order a pizza.
In the ASA book they gave a list of stuff I SHOULD carry, the instructor also gave me a list, but figured it was for "real sailboats, not my little "B-cup".
Now I got myself a "real boat"!
The book said to have....
Signal flares (or flag), I had the flag, was on;lt doing day sailing.
Noise maker-I had a whistle and a small hand held air horn
Fire Ext. (even though I had a electric motor, I figured why not)
a "stout" tow line-incase my sails ran out of gas or wouldn't start??????
More than enough PFD for adults 1 kid and me dawg.
C.G. approved seat cushion.
anyhitng else I'm gonna need now?
A what point should I get a VHF radio for my PT?
Is there a difference between a portable VHF and a portable "Marine VHF"?
Should I even look at a portable?
Is there a "standard channel" (like #9 on a C.B.) I should have it set at?
Where is the antenea usually mounted? My mast?
Seems like there is a LOT stuck to the top of it...... the anchor light, wind direction indicator, antenea........ There is only sooo much room up there........................
As for charts......................
I'm a map junkie, always have been.
When my good Uncle sent me to southeast Asia for a vay-k, I was the one who read the maps, (you can't trust a officer for anything, NCO's run the army)!
I can sit and look at top. maps, road maps, all day.
I've been looking @ at marina local for charts to practice my nag skills, (U tube is a great learning tool), but all I have found are your basic map showing the lake in question and not much else.
I wanna practice then take the nag ASA course.
(anyone can use a GPS to nag with, but, I'm old school, one day those satelites are gonna fall from the sky and a lot of sailors are gonna be lost, but not me!!)
Is there a on line site to get charts of the waters I want to sail on??
Joe
So much to learn, so few $$!!!
