Beneteau Oceanis 390 Tsehum Harbour, BC, Canada
My current navigation setup on Tula my 39 foot Beneteau is: 1. Dell D505 Laptop at the nav station 2. Old V4.1 Nobeltec on the laptop - really like it; 3. Full CHS Paper Charts of Canadian waters 4. Old Garmin 12XL GPS (removeable)and Garmin 120 GPS (fixed) (discontinued) at the helm as backup latter from former owner. 5. Autohelm ST50 (?) and Raymarine radar (rarely use) from former owner Needs: 1. Plan voyages at home in Calgary, plot courses, print planbooks and colour chart sections, marina contacts, emergency contacts and take slim 3-ring binder with me to the boat. Sail 50 days a year for now. In two years may live onboard and will venture further afield beyond the Gulf Islands/Southern BC. 2. Have an easily readable chartplotter at the helm. 3. Do not break the bank. I find the GPSmap 76c great but a little hard to read. 4. For now just need charts around Vancouver Island. I have been reviewing hardware/software setups and is this confusing or what!! Garmin will not let me use/see a good demo of MapSource but it apparently does not match Nobeltec. This proprietary thing is not good. I am confused as to where to go. Peter

Peter, the fam got me a Garmin 178C...

with external antenna last year. Took it with me on our Desolation Sound cruise last season. We were out seven weeks. I purchased the 32MB data card through E-bay, which holds more than 250 charts covering all of Puget Sound, and inside and outside Vancouver Island waters. I also have it hooked up to our Autohelm 7000 autopilot. What a wonder! Easy to use, high quality display and you always know where you are regardless of conditions. I plot our route the night before at the nav station and run the course to make sure we have a clear way. You can always edit on the fly if need be. I also purchased a data card reader so that I can download charts from my PC at home to the data card. I could go on. It also has tide tables, marine services, etc. I suggested to Garmin they add slack water tables for key passes. Hope so. I mounted the unit at the helm, but I can remove it for storage below decks when not in use. Terry
