Sailor, beautiful boat you have there what year is it! Do you have electric toilets? What made you decide to change out your hoses?

We have not experienced that with our 2006 41DS but it has electric fresh water heads which might be the difference. Looks like an ugly job though.

Interesting that when we bought our 41DS we were planning on taking it to the Puget Sound but changed our minds and went south instead. Did you buy her new?

The dificult part is inserting the fittings into the hose. Use a hair dyer (dont use heat gun)to heat up the ends/use gloves hose gets very hot. You may have to reheat a couple of times. A bit of lubricant may help as you have to rotate the hose around the fitting. make sure you rinse and drain old hoses and wash hands frequently while removing old hoses.

Cover the ends of the hose with a plastic bag and seal with duct tape. Keep the nasty inside.

freah water makes all the diference

fresh water does not deteriate the hose like salt and urine do. causes a salt build up in hose and the smell eventually leaches out. Our old boat a 91 37.5 changed hoses every 5 years.
i hope to couple new hose to old with proper coupling and pull new hose thru while pulling out old hose..
we bought boat newish had an owner for 6 months.before us..

Did the job last year on our 2005 H44. Toughest part of the job was getting old hose out as it was threaded through the floor and bulkhead stringers and had become brittle. Could not take it out in one piece and had to cut out various sections. I wish I had flushed out the old hose more thoroughly as each time I cut it the residual drained into the bilge and it took awhile to clean out. Threading the new hose which was thicker but much more flexible was significantly easier.

Re: freah water makes all the diference

that's how we changed the long (17'!) hose on our 356, worked really well - found a smooth 1 1/2x1 1/2 coupling and used one layer of thin tape to secure. worked the hose thru the port in the head down to sole level, the thru the boat to the tank. any liquid in the old hose ended up in the new hose, no spills!

Fresh Water

After you change your hoses with all the help here and don't want to do that any time soon.
I now have a Sea Era electric and use fresh water which will keep the salt build up and also smells out of your hoses.
On my first Hunter with a manual head I had a fresh water sprayer like used on home sinks and use that to flush and also had a hose from my sink to flush the head with fresh water into the flushing part of the head.
If you can do any of these things to flush with fresh water will be so much better and everything will last so much longer and also much less smells also.
Good Luck with your project.

While a hair dryer might work, there is a much easier way, which is foolproof.
Simply boil some water in a small pot,
Stick the end of the hose in the hot water for about 1-2 minutes.
It totally softens up the end enough to slip onto the new fittings.

How do you do that once the hose is snaked around, ending at the right spot, and cut to the correct. What pot of hot water are you going to be able to get into that spot and get the hose into?

Sounds good but more likely you are going to burn you hand.

there is always enough slack in the end of a hose to turn it vertical.
I have found on some occasions to dump the freshly boiled water into a large mug works as well.
It doesn't take much time to soften up the tubing. The thing is by putting it in hot water you are getting inside and on the outside walls of the hose. It really does work very well.

Is that the hoses may get hung up while trying to [pull it thru from holding tank to heads. I was hoping someone with a 41DS had already done this job and could tell me if there are any such concerns.. From my perspective it looks like Hunter assembled the boat Hull around the hoses!
All the tips that have come in will be helpful thanks a lot fellas.

Sailor that was my thoughts when I looked at how the hoses were run! Good luck to you and I may be asking you for advice in the future!

Although not the same boat, some long runs
Here is what you should do.
Make a bushing the exact ID of the hose. Wood works great
Make it about 3-4 inches long
Shove it half way into the end of the hose you are removing
Then put screws through the hose Into the bushing
Now connect the new hose to the old
Now, you just have to push & tug like a madman to force the new hose along the old path
Cover it in dish washing detergent, as it will make pulling the new hose in much easier

Mar June this is your neighbor Kite Runner. You know my history and where I've worked for 37 years of my life. I've run more electrical conduit, copper and stainless pipe, bundles of signal wires and so on. I have the proper lubricant to your avail, devices to feed to or pull from A to B and a few good suggestions that might win this battle. Throw a case of beer my way and we'll talk... or surrender those pics of me up the mast installing radar deflectors! :)

You can find me at slip O-37 or just whistle! You know how to whistle don't you?

I have the correct connector for the hose has barbs on it so hose wont slip off. used it to do same job on our old boat (91 37.5) . i was hoping to find from another 41 owner if there any place that the hose pull thru without major surgery to floor . will use detergent for lube good idea

Detergent for lube

There are 2 reasons that this works well:
Firstly, it's really slippery
Next, any excess just goes down in your bilge and is harmless soap.
Also, it's the cheapest thing you can use.
I understand you have hose barbs to join the hoses, but you need to ensure they don't pull out.
You don't want to use hose clamps, cause they will snag on any holes the hose runs through.
You should use flat head self tapping screws to connect the hose to the barb.
That way the profile is not sticking up above the hose diameter.
You really want to make sure that there's no way this union is going to come apart when you are pulling the hose through. It will be a big problem if that happens.

The good thing is that head hose is flat on the OD. I had the nasty job of re-installing my bilge pump hose last summer. That stuff is ribbed on the OD, and was a real pain to pull through. Took the better part of a day.
And you need to do a lot of this hanging upside down in a bilge.
By the end of it, my arms were out of commission for a week
