I have a 1988 Hunter Legend35. The Cutless Bearing appears to have to much slop in it and I need to change it. How do I find out what replacement bearing to get? Are there Model #s? I can find shaft size, length and so forth.

Cutlass Bearing

Obewan, you can try Atlantis propeller, they were very helpful with identifying the bearing on our H-31,they were also very reasonable. Visit their web site.

How hard was it to remove the strut?

I wondered about doing that job. Mine (bearing) came out easily using a pipe and a big c clamp to push it out. It is even easier if you loosen the set screws which hold it in. It looks like a LOT of work to remove the strut but I have never done it.

Cutlass Bearing Size 1-in x 1-1/4-in x 4-in

Cutlass: size is 1-in x 1-1/4-in x 4-inches The brand sold locally is: Duramax® Marine LLC 17990 Great Lakes Parkway Hiram, OH 44234 USA Phone: 440.834.5400 Fax: 800.834.9283 (US and Canada) Fax: 440.834.4950 http://www.duramax-marine.com/bearings.htm but of course Also, Pacific Marine cutlass bearings at http://pacificmarine.net/metallic.htm Any cutlass with the above dimensions will work. Prop shaft: Propeller Shaft 1-in diameter x 57.5-inches long with standard taper. Strut: Model No. SEF 1510 Southeastern Foundries Corporation 2706 Oakland Avenue POB 7323 Greensboro NC 27417-0323 Tel 336-299-7211 To replace the cutlass there are two set screws on the side of the strut and they must be looseend or removed. They are probably covered up with paint. The strut is fairly easy to remove save for the bedding sealant. It will take two people - one on the inside to loosen the nuts and one on the outside with a screwdriver to keep the screws from turning. Access to the four nuts is easy under the aft cabin berth once the cushions are removed. If you remove the four machine screws then be sure to epoxy-seal the holes before puting everything back together in order to prevent water intrusion into the fiberglass hull. Hope this helps. HL-35s rock!

Just as an extra

I removed the cutlass bearing on my boat a few years ago without having to remove the strut. I have a friend at the boatyard who lent me a tool that allows removal with only the prop removed. Total time out and in was under 1/2 hour.

Professional job

I wouldn't take the strut off. Good boat yards have an attachment that clamps to the prop shaft and strut. With hydraulic pressure they use a split sleeve to push the bearing out the back of the strut. (after the prop is taken off) Then they push on the new one without removing the prop shaft or strut. For about $90.00 plus the new bearing cost, you save banging around on the strut and disturbing everything. I would not like to think of having to re-align the engine mounts (later) because the strut went back in slightly different and the prop shaft was slapping. On my boat it was an hour of labor. I recommend finding someone to push it out.
