Can you rebuild the bulkhead?
Hi Joey:My 22 had a little problem on the port bulkhead chainplate. I bought four Shaefer 6" chainplates and drilled them out every inch or so and used them as extenders to the existing 2 inch long chainplates. The new chainplates overlap the existing ones, one on each side of each bulkhead (two port, two starboard), and extend 4 inches further down the face of the bulkhead, catching good strong wood. The bolts are run through the existing and new chainplates, and at the overlap. It beat having to reglass or fill the rotted section with exopy and it gives me a little more reinforcement in the chainplates. I have heard of these things failing and the masts falling on O'Day 22's. The cost of the parts was not very much at all and it took a few hours to do the work. Drilling out the new chainplates will take a hour alone.I am not sure about running hte shrouds to the gunwhale. O'day did not add any reinforcing there and the only area with blocking in the deck is where the chainplate is. Also changing the geometry of the shrouds and the chainplate location may necessitate getting a new set of shrouds made which can be costly.Good luck and hope that you can get some sailing in before year's end.
