Cetol Dilemma

This past August (2002)I purchased a brand new 19' Menger Cat sailboat. The exterior teak on the boat was prepared at the builders with Cetol. The boat was in the water for three months before being setup for the winter. Spring is coming and I am getting ready to prepare the boat for the upcoming season. Even though the Cetol is in "ok" shape I would like to clean it up 100% for the season. My dilemma is ....Do I take it down to the wood and start from scatch (again, it was only exposed to the elements for about 3 months. It is in pretty good shape)? Can I just sand down sections that need repair and work on those? How do you prepare for Cetol ontop of Cetol?

A light sanding...

and touch up is all that should be necessary. You should get many years out of Cetol before major rework is needed. That's the beauty of Cetol!

Urethane over cetol

My friend John has refurbished a Catalina 27 and used light Cetol, which looked great although it didn't last many seasons. When I saw him last week, he was checking on the ice around his hull, and mentioned trying something he had heard about; putting a coat of polyurethane on top of the several coats of Cetol. Said it worked great and extended the life many times. disclaimer: haven't tried it myself but I'm going to.
