I am looking into replacing the jam cleat, which secures the centerboard up-haul in the “up” position and would like to hear from others that may have done the same. My boat’s previous owner told me that, "... the centerboard up-haul falls out of the jam cleat all the time ...", so I have no real first-hand experience with this matter. If this proves to be the case with other owners, I am interested in suggestions concerning a more positive holding device (and also wonder why Hunter didn’t just use a standard cleat in the first place).

Add a cleat

I just put a small backup cleat on the outside of the centerboard trunk. The camcleat was kind of worn. There is not much weight there anyway and I know it won't fail.

Replacing Clam Cleat

Because of water damage I'm having to replace the table which sits on the center board trunk and associated hardware. That clam cleat you are speaking of could be very difficult to replace with removing the table. With the table off, it should be fairly easy. However, that said, I agree with one of the previous responses, a cleat fastened to the trunk is a good backup. I have one also.
