Center Board Uphaul

I just purchased a 1995 Hunter 26 and took it out for the first time yesterday. I really like the boat, but when we came in we found it extremely difficult to raise the centerboard. We finally got it up by pulling the rope at the foot of the mast and winching in the slack. I looked in the manual and saw that there should be a block arrangement which gives better mechanical advantage for raising the centerboard. It is called the Center Board Control Line System. It basically looks like a couple of blocks connected to the uphaul line. Does anyone have a better drawing or picture of this arrangement than what is in the manual. Should I be able to make this up myself? How difficult is it typically to raise the centerboard when properly rigged? Thanks for the help, Paul

Greta Information

Rick and George, This is excellent information. The block arrangement is apparently what is missing on my boat making raising the center board so difficult. Thank you both very much! Paul

Another question-Uphaul

Rick, Could I bother you with one last question? What is the size of the block shown in your your uphaul rigging? Thanks, Pau

Centerboard Block Size

Paul, the on-line owners' manual is the link below for the blocks from Hunter. http://www.ayesail.net/sailing/Hunter/ManualH260/Page39B.htm They are about 1 1/2" in size, if that helps.

Yikes!

The board can be hard to pull up even with the mechanical advantage of the normal block setup. Even with that I often use the winch. Ron Mehringer h26 Hydro-Therapy

whaaaaa?

Don't mean to induce a flame..but come on ...the 26 cb is very easy to haul up, but very hard to pull up if the boat is moving, any roll of the hull will jam the board tight, and trying to adjust while sailing would be lunacy. I actually have to be carefull not to "slam" it up too hard by putting too much pressure on the uphaul.I only adjust my cb with no resistance against it IE: mainsheet slack and headsail furled or flapping. If your CB is hard to pull up in still water or at the dock, then I would investigate the system to see if the uphaul had slipped off a block somewhere and is in a bind (hopefully not down under the cb trunk) There is good reason to use the line and adjust the CB, like sailing downwind, substantial speed increase can be achieved with the board fully up, and while motoring I let out just a tad of CB so the boat tracks better and the tillerpilot uses less juice

I'll find out

Rob, I guess that I won't really know on mine until I install the correct rigging for raising it. Just got a slip at Ventura yesterday and I'll be putting it back into the water this weekend. Thanks for your comments about when to raise and lower the CB. seems like this topic could easily be a thread of its own. This this boat is new to me, any advice would be appreciated. Paul

Rob

The cb on our '97 h26 has never been easy to pull up, even though the line is properly seated on the pulley. Maybe there's a problem elsewhere, but it's all out of sight so I don't know. Ron
