Caught on time

While deciding to give Jacob's Dream a complete face lift with awgrip paint from keel to maast step, I figured while she's undergoing that, I should step the mast and replace/check all lectrical and halyards on the mast.

The mast had been on for so long that they had a real hard time seperating them. The crane picked the ENTIRE boat up seem like 2 ft before the mast serperated from the step. My heart was jumping when i heard it go. Sounded almost like a shotgun blast. Close inspection afterwards revealed what looked like 2 or 3 tubes of 5200 around the step.

But what was scary is the shape my foil and headstay were in for the hood roller at top . Seems like halyard wrap had taken its toal .

Could not have picked a better time to replace it with a new harken unit 1 system than while she,s on the ground.

Pretty scary Chuck to think that was holding up the mast. Or maybe the 5200 was keeping it up there. Still I envy you the project. Nothing like making a great boat a little better. Will you also do the spars? That is what Ladylove needs more than anything.

Well after seeing the cancer, i am doing the full treatment. I really never have liked the hood system so now is the time to change it out. Question is, Is there really that much difference in Harken over CDI , or is it like fords verses Chevy? " Volvo man myself "

Check out the Spin-Tec unit. We have one and like it. There is no chance of halyard wrap, because the halyard does not stay attached. No powder coated parts either. Any disimilar metals are isolated so there is no corrosion problems.

I think that the CDI units are okay for the smaller boats. We removed ours from our HV'36 and replaced it with the Spin-tec unit.

I am in fly creek at Eastern Shore Marine. Boat is going in the paint booth/ building by Friday next week.

Will be working on getting new harken unit installed next week end.

What are you doing with non-skid areas?
How much are they charging approx.?
Are you removing fittings, stantions, etc.?

well the entire project is budgeted for abt $10k including new harken unit and forstay.

Actually that is from the bottom of keel to top of mast with awgrip paint and new bottom paint. Also included is stepping the mast and rebedding windows.

Actuall coast may vary a bit when done.


The non skid will be masked off and painted on .

While it is OK to store a boat for a few years leaving the mast up, it should be unstepped every 3 or 4 years. My opinion.

Good catch, Chuck ! That headstay was one of those 2 AM "BANG!" things that can wake the off watch guys !

Thanks Dick, I will look forward to it. Now that im retired i hope to enjoy the boat more tthan when i was gone 21 days at a time.. lol
