Hi Steve -I just used Evercoat to fill the crack, then faired it out and painted the area along with the rest of the bottom. No muss, no fuss.Best,Trevor
I recently filled the "smile" with West System Epoxy & filler. While the epoxy was hardening a few small bubbles of water appeared. I had opened up the crack a bit a month ago and made sure the bilge was dry, but there was still moisture in the keel. How do remove all the moisture? Thanks for any comments!
Thanks Chris. I was talking to some other catalina owners who said I might have to replace the the wood above the keel. I wait till fall and see what it looks like when I pull the boat. I don't think there are any leaks yet.steve
I originally filled my "Catalina Smile" in 2000. When I hauled again in 2002 it hadn't reappeared yet, but I've heard it's common to revisit the gap every so often. Bottom line is that it usually isn't a structural problem, but it's definitely a good idea to stay on top of it and keep a close eye out.Best,Trevor
Thanks Trevor, the boat's in the water already. I look at it in fall. I have a few rough spots on the bottom that need attention. This is my first year with the boat so I was anxious to get it in the water. no leaks yet. But I'll get after it before commissioning nest year.steve
