MacGregor 26X Trailer. I sail Inland Lakes & the southern California coasts. I'm hoping to sail the Keys soon.
Wow! I did a crazy thing. I finally bought my first sail boat! It's a 1974 Catalina 27. I've wanted a sail boat for years but maybe I made a rash decision... :doh:It's in San Diego and I'm in Las Vegas hmmm.... Oh well jump in with both feet and work out the details, right? Well any way I want to have the flexability of moving it to Lake Mead or the pacific so I'm looking for a trailer. The new ones are about $6500.00 so I'm looking for a used trailer to keep the cost down. I'm thinking a couple of grand or less. I've looked on ebay and found equipment trailers that could possibly be modified but being new to this game I'm still looking for the best approach. I don't know if they can be modified or not or at what cost.
Does anyone have any suggestions or referrals.
By the way where's the best place to get the 101 & 103 Cost Guard courses taken in San Diego?
The other approach might be to find a cheap slip up the coast around Oxnard or somewhere. It would be as close for me to drive! Does any body know of a cheap slip on the west coast? Thank you kindley!

Catalina 27 (Standard Rig; O/B; Dinette Int.) Santa Barbara Harbor
You can expect to pay between $300 to $350 a month for a slip in Oxnard for your C27.

I'm in the market as were . Colonial Beach
If you were to find a trailer, how would you step the mast each time off of the trailer. That and you would probably need a travel lift to launch the boat. You might have been better with a Catalina 25, 250 or a Hunter 26 or 260 because they are designed for trailer sailing.

Ya, It looks as if that's about as inexpensive as it gets. That might work.
Thanks!

I know other people have done it ~I'll have to devise a mast raising system. I was looking at the mast the other day and it's going to take a bit of doing. I've seen gin poles on Mac 26's and a raising system that was attached to the boat deck and looked like like an upside down V, when up, that worked like a gin pole and did a good jop but this is a tall rig ~ might be a challenge. My Idea was to get the boat to Las Vegas where I could work on it a bit launch it in Lake mead for a couple of years and then back to the sea. I,m still thinking about it though. Might be too much work.
Thanks

I disagree, I use a 15' tongue extension to launch my C-27. The rear tires of my truck just barely touch the water. I just float the boat on or off.
As for stepping the mast, I have used an A frame which is ok but I really like my new system of a heavy duty 22' extension ladder with a boom mounted to the top of the ladder. The boom is used to increase the height of the ladder. I lean the ladder up against the boat next to the mast step and tie off the top of boom , middle of ladder and bottom of ladder for support. I have a block and tackle attached to the top of the boom to raise and lower the mast. It works just like an A frame but easier to put into place. I plan on using a chain hoist instead of the block and tackle next time which will allow me to have better control. This is not my design. I read about this from a person that was using this system on a C-28.:)

Well just a followup - I sold the Catalina 27 in the summer of 2009 and then bought a Macgregor 26x.
At first I was a little disappointed because it was such a different feel. It is a little tender at first but then stiffens up nicely. Now that I have had it for a year I am really beginning to enjoy it.
