Catalina 310 almost sank due to faulty starboard though hull fitting. (galley sink)

Yes you did @jviss. I never saw a response from the OP.

“That guy” is me. I had a cold or a frog in my throat! But point well taken…I will need to be aware of how clearly that comes through on the video ;-)

Greg
Oh, I'm so sorry! It's funny, I made a video once and learned of a couple of vocal and nasal ticks I have that I was never aware of. Made me so self conscious!

But thank you for the video, it's a very graphic lesson in what can happen to these hoses with just time. I had a flood from two broken cockpit scupper hoses, that failed the same winter after about 25 years.

I have a plan to replace all of my engine hoses this year, raw water and fresh water, and to carefully inspect all the other hoses. Some are virtually inaccessible, like deck scuppers that have hoses inside the hull leading to sea chests. Also, there are the bilge hoses.... This current boat is a 1996.

Thanks,

jv

Here are a couple of pictures showing the rotted backing plate before and after removal. I am just sealing off the male fitting with epoxy putty, making a new backing plate, and screwing back on the old valve. Better to let a little grey water from the sink go into the bilge than a lot of sea water

I am effectively eliminating the galley sink thru hull and diverting the grey water into the bilge
I think that's a big mistake. I would either have the gray water go overboard, or capture it in a gray water holding tank. I wouldn't want sink water, including food debris, etc., in my bilge.

If the boat is out of the water, replace the whole thing and know it is fixed before you put her back in the water.

I would replace the skin fitting (or at least remove and rebed if it ok shape), new backing plate, and reinstall valve if you are sure it is in good condition.

Please don't.:badbad:

Think of the potential food wastes that could plug up your main Bilge pump.

The bilge pump probably saved your boat from sinking.

Mmmmm, rotten lettuce scraps in the bilge.... As if it doesn't smell bad enough already. :)

I would fix it right. It will preserve the value of the boat, if nothing else.

That seized up. The NYC fireboat saved it Their high pressure pump removed the water

Where are you planning on putting the epoxy putty? If you’re making a new backing plate and still having a valve, why would you want gray water into the bilge instead of out the valve? As others have suggested, letting the gray water into the bilge will make a mess that will take lots more time and dirty work to clean than fixing it now.

Have you taken a whiff, lately? LOL. I thank everyone for their advice. I just came up with the best solution. Directly underneath the sink is a plastic wastebasket. Instead of putting a longer drain hose and running the grey water into the bilge, I will cut it short and have it drain into the waste basket, then spill it overboard. I can decide next year if I want to restore the thru hull fitting, or remove it altogether and have the hole glassed over

You know it takes just as long to do things the wrong way as it takes to do things the right way.
get your hole saw fit over the stub saw it out put the new one in properly with instruction from many many sources online and written

That would result in my needing the next size larger. The current stub is 1&1/8" outside diameter. My solution is simply intended to salvage the rest of the season while I decide what to do for next year
