I'm about to purchase my first sail boat. I live in Michigan now and will for the next five years. Then I'm moving to south Florida, Marco Island. I want to sail Lk. Michigan now, then the Florida Keys, Bahamas etc. in five years when I retire. Is a Catalina 30 big enough for the open water around Florida and beyond? I don't think I want to buy two boats. Think I should be thinking a 32' rather than a 30'?

It could work for both purposes BUT...

Ok, so this is your first boat. I think most of us here would agree that after 5 years you'll probably be ready for a different boat. My suggestion: Buy an mid to late 80s C30 for under $35,000, learn to sail it, cruise it on the lake and learn all you can about all different boats. By the time you move to FL you may decide that you'll sell the C30 & get something else when you move. This would be opposed to buying a newer 32 for more money & finding the same thing out. Now don't get me wrong, I think the C30 would work fine for your prospective needs, making sure that you keep weather in mind & that a C30 is not really made for very heavy weather (ie: hurricanes) although I'm sure some have come out relatively unscathed. Know that slightly older Catalinas really hold their value. You probably won't get exactly what you paid for it but if you got it for a sweet deal, you just might. Good luck! LaDonna

Yes

You should check out the Holcomb's adventure in a C-30 from Wisconsin to Tampa. Must have worked. I have an '89 C-30 and live in Florida. The boat works fine. I would temper that with how many will be sailing? And, how tall are you?

C-30 CRUISING

Check out Jim and Sue Corenman, they now cruise in a 50ft Carl Shumacher design, but they started out doing the pacific cup to hawaii in a C-30, and went on to cruise in the south pacific in it. He is one of the inventors of Sail Mail. they have several books on cruising and you can always find their articles in most sailing mags, Im taking mine to Mexico next year for an open ended cruise, and have been living aboard for 3 years now.
