I am considering purchasing a Catalina 28 Mark I for the Pacific Northwest. I am wondering if anyone has a advise as to how the boat sails in light air. Possible gear you would not be without. Were there different rig sizes avaiable for the Mark I? Has anyone club raced them? thanks for your input Pat Dean PS my email address should read pdean@telus.net

We have one down here in California and really enjoy it. You can find a tall rig version of the mark 1 although I don't recall seeing one for sale in the last year. The boat is a sturdy little crusing boat and I'm sure you can find faster one's in that class although none as comfortable. Check out the assocation page for more info. http://clubs.sailnet.com/cat28/

get a drifter or spinnaker

Pat I have a 1990 catalina 28 that I club race for the fun of it, not too many trophies. She's pretty good up wind but weighs a ton on the way to the leeward mark. I have a 135 Genoa but am considering light air sails, we have some dog days in late summer, and in South Louisiana it's hot..I've got to get that boat moving better downwind. However, she's a great boat to race single handed even with 20 Kt winds. I have a wheel pilot that steers while I sheet in the jib. plus she's very comfortable for the crew if you have one..
