Catalina 270, Fair Market Price?

I've set my sights on a Catalina 270 wing keel (upgrading from Catalina 250 water ballast) for my next boat. It is basically the biggest boat I can fit in my dock since the slips are 10' wide. It looks really nice to me compared to other brands' offerings in this size range. I must either buy one with a trailer or buy a trailer separately in order to get the boat back to my local lake.

One recently sold on sailboatlistings.com in good condition with a trailer for $20k. Is this just an amazing fluke deal, or do you think I could score one for $20k for a trailer if I am patient?

Thank you!

You have to be careful judging the price of a 1994 270. There was the bare bone 270 and the more desirable 270LE. After a year the 270LE became the standard and was just called the 270.

I am not sure where you are, but a quick search on YachtWorld shows 2 boats…both way over $20K. But also newer.

Searching other boat sites may give you an idea. YachtWorld seems to list higher end boats through brokers…

For what it is worth, I bought my 1988 O’Day 322 for about $22K in what I could call a fire sale…

Guynho owned it was moving out of state and need to get rid the boat. So he sold it to me for less than he paid for it a few years earlier. So deals are out there…

I advised a friend on purchasing one a few years back. With a newish Loadmaster trailer, this very clean 270 from the Great Lakes region went for around $34k, if I remember correctly.

I think that most would agree that there is pretty much no way to answer the question. The responses so far give you some ideas for comparison. But, I do think that $20k is not necessarily amazingly low. It depends so much on the details: year, condition, equipment, and just as critically ... the circumstances and motivation of the seller.

Unless you have really high expectations, I'm betting you can find the occasional deal at that price point. Of course, normal cautions apply. That is, do your homework, obviously. But that is true regardless of the sale price.
