Hello, like posted I have a 1982 Catalina 27 with an 11hp diesel. Last week we were cruising and I noticed a dark fluid (I'm guessing transmission fluid) in the engine compartment. Upon further investigation I found while looking in the stuffing box the shaft was spraying the fluid from where the shaft enters the transmission. I kept up on the fluid, made it home and now I need a solution, so if anyone knows about these symptoms or has information it would be much appreciated. Thanks all

Sounds like your transmission has blown its rear main seal. Your lucky you made it home before it ran dry, overheated & blew the trans all together. You need to talk to a marine mechanic about a likely transmission overhaul or rebuild. If your lucky, just the rear main seal needs replaced, but if it overheated badly it may have damaged the trans. Good thing you had some fluid to put in it, or it really would've fried! It was a good thing that you checked your engine compartment while running. That would have escaped most people until the transmission seized up. Good luck.

A blown seal doesn't mean you need a rebuild, it means you need a new seal. Except for gaining access its only about 1/2 hour labor.

Thanks guys, I was going to replace the cutless bearing this winter anyways so I'll take it one step further and attempt the rear seal. Would you happen to know if thats a pressed seal or something I can do myself?
