Dear Friends, On my 1986 Cat 27' I find the built in cooler in the galley to be useful but strange! It is very deep and I was wondering if anyone has any ideas for how they use theirs successfully? My family would rather use a carry on cooler but I rather not. Even with a couple of bags of ice, it is still a little deep. We installed two dish strainer racks to make it a shorter reach in to retrive sodas and the like. any thoughts?

Ice box

I screwed 1"x1" wood ledger strips to the sides of the ice box, about 8" below the lid. Then I had a local plastics fabrication shop make me shelves to fit in the box, and lie on top of the ledger boards. Now I can set food that I want to keep cold, but don't want to get sopping wet on top of the plastic shelves, and the food stays cold and dry. (Food like packaged salads, lunchmeat packages, vegaetables etc.) The drinks that are used only once or twice a day (orange juice, milk, etc.) stay at the bottom of the box. I also keep water bottles, beer and softdrinks in a separate 25qt portable ice chest that sit on the cabin sole and attach with bungies to the bulkhead under the stove. That way, the foodstuffs keep cold longer because the ice box isn't opened as often, and drinks are easy to get at. The only time the built-in ice box is opened is to access food at mealtime. Other thoughts if you haven't already done so: 1) Insulate the sides & bottom of the box with spray foam 2) Epoxy strofoam insulation to the underside of the ice box lid 3) Get an insulating blanket to insert in the box under the lid and on top of all the food to act as additional insulation. 3) Keep the thru-hull for the ice box closed except to drain the meltwater a couple times a day. 4) Blocks of ice last longer than cubes but don't fill the box as well. I use both in my box.
