I am looking at a 1991 Catalina 30 Tall Rig. One of my reqirements is that the boat needs the ability to point well. I sail out of a long bay and often find myself tacking in or out so getting close to the wind is a big deal. Would appreciate input from Cat 30 owners.

Pointing 30

You will really love the boat. Great to sail single hand and very forgiving. If it is a fin keel, the sails in good shape, it will point quite well. I sailed along side of a friends boat that had a wing keel, tall rig (mine was a fin) and I could out point him every time easily.

On the wind

The boat sails great on the wind. We had a C30 for five seasons and gave up nothing to boats our size. The trick is to reef early and stay balanced. C30s sail faster on their feet than they do well heeled. It is a great sailing boat.

to wind

I agree 100% with the others and i have found that a adjustable back stay is really important and gets rid of weather helm a lot as well as adding amuch sharper point(very inexpensive addition

Adjusting Backstay - Jamie

Jamie, I also have a C30 with an adjustable backstay. I have not had the boat long and have not tried adjusting the backstay. Could you provide some info on how and when you adjust your backstay to improve your upwind performance. Thanks

Pointing ability

I have a 1977 Catalina 30 with a fin keel and the pointing ability is very good. Naturally, the stronger the wind the higher you can point by pinching. In average conditions I can point comfortablly at abou 40 degrees off wind, apparent. I also have the standard rig. The tall rig should amke the pointing a little better.

Feel free to "flame" the nay-sayer, but...

I love my Cat 30, but... They don't point as well as many other boats. If you care about pointing & getting somewhere, you might opt for a racing boat rather than a cruising boat. I have spent the past couple years racing on a cat 30. top of the line sails, great skipper & crack crew. We get out pointed by the racing boats. Of course our boat is the only 30' sleeping the entire crew of 6 comfortably. & yes, we do win races (there's more to winning than pointing well). Food for thought.

Pointing Abitily

I haven a Catalina 30 and think the boat points great. I have race the boat every week and twice in yacth clubs racing and think she points great.I have a fin keel boat.I have not use my backstay adjuster. I have sail the boat from 5 knots of wind to 30 knots of wind and she points great.

Point-point-point...

It seems that most of the time the direction we want to go, the wind is coming from there also! If you want to point your Cat 30 you will need good sails, (inboard tracks), and a backstay adjuster. Due to the beam of the Cat 30 she does not point as well as the "racing" boats. But does she live well down below! Flatten the sails and have inboard tracks! I have had a Cat 25 with racing cut sails, and there is no comparison to the ability to point. The Cat 25 could easily point 35 degrees. Remember "It is not how high you can point, but how much you enjoy the ride!" I think anyone who has sailed the Cat 30 will agree! They are a great boat and will point easily at 40 degrees and will pinch 30-35 degrees (with enough wind). Enjoy the ride...
