Cat 30 passagemaker?

Hi there, I recently purchased a 1988 Catalina 30 in Savannah GA. I need to get her to Bermuda. She passed her survey with all systems in good shape. I'm interested in whether or not any of you feel that boat is, as designed, stout enough to make the passage. Do you think there are any systems that should be strengthened? Chainplates perhaps? Blue Water Sailing

Well, with what I've read on the many postings, just about any boat can sail to anywhere if it's properly set up and if the weather conditions are right. Pick your weather window and with the right crew and just go! Should be a nice sail. Jim Stocks

Blue Water?

Hi Robb: I will state right up front, that I am a Great Lakes sailor, no ocean experience. I love my C30 and think its a great boat. I believe it is built for inland and coastal cruising, NOT bluewater, unless you do some major mods. You may find it cheaper to ship than do the work that would make you comfortable in the big blue. Talk to some blue water cruisers and see what they have to say. Make sure that they have "been there, done that" I shipped my C30 900 miles via truck this spring, for a cost of $1200 US. I have no idea what shipping via boat would be. Good luck, and let us know what you decide. Dave S/V Westwind

Bermuda

Dear C. Robb, On April 26th 2001 I am leaving singlehanded from Baltimore Maryland, destination Bermuda. My vessel is a 1981 C-30. I have meticulously reviewed every system on the vessel. I have an autopilot and a back up autopilot. I am currently in the process of rerigging to the same original specifications using norseman fittings. The boat is essentially unchanged from the original manufactuer's original specifications. I have added a few features here and there for convinience and for comfort but the boat basically stock. I have a furling head stay and storm sails. I have a reefing main that works. I added a Ham radio and insulated the back stay. I have a six man inflatable life raft and a 406 MHZ EPIRB. I just finished rebuilding the Universal Atomic Four Engine last week. I have sea trialed her on the Chessapeake Bay and coastal Atlantic Ocean. I am a good and confident sailor. My answer to your question: I'll shake you hand personally in bermuda on about May 3 and proudly say "Welcome aboard!" It Surprised Me . .

Hello Guys and Gals Regarding the capability of a C 30 to sail to Bermuda. There's a book at West Marine entitled "20 Small Boats you Can Take Anywhere." (Small is under 30 ft). Anywhere means trans Atlantic as well. The book provides a few pages of discussion on each boat's strengths and weaknesses. Some boats listed included the Pearson Triton, Contessa, Southern Cross, Bristol Channel Cutter, Pacific Seacraft, Cape Dory . . and Catalina 27! It surprised me. So I guess it's plausible that a C 30 if properly outfitted, could make the trip. Good luck! Melody
