Hi, Just purchased a 1990 30, great boat, but hope you all don't mind all the questions I'm sure to have in the near future. The first question concerns cabin carpeting. There was none with the boat and we would like to add. Can you go to Catalina directly or are you better off going local, Any ideas?? Thanks David

Carpet

Considering the beating boat carpet gets from water, sand, etc. I would cut my own. Get some butcher paper

I went to a carpet remnant store and found a color that worked. You don't need a continuous piece because it can be pieced together. I paid about $100, including binding, for a 9X12 remnant.

A word of caution

If you cut your own using a butcher paper template, be sure to lay the top surface of the template on the bottom surface of the carpet before marking and cutting!

Thanx

Thanks for all the advice. It sounds like a good winter project. I didn't know if Catalina sold direct at affordable prices. david

Do it yourself

Have some friends who recently refurbished the inside of a new-to-them C30. They did the carpet remnant thing, had it bound and honestly it looks like factory.

Don't!

My '77 Cat 30 came without carpeting and, frankly, I like it that way. Cleaning up is a breeze and you don't have to worry about the smell of wet carpeting, hoping it will try, hanging it out to try, etc. Plus if you have small children and/or animals (we have both) that get on the boat, you really won't want carpet. Instead, add some of those no slip strips they sell for showers, either plain white ones or the more fanciful fish, etc. Let's face it - carpet and salt water don't mix.

Maybe Don't

It's a persons own choice whether to have carpeting or not, but I tend to agree with the previous response. My previous boat had just the fiberglass liner as a floor. I put in carpeting for a year, but decided it was more of a dirt-collecting device than anything else, so I took it out. I could then clean the floor with a damp rag. My current boat has a wooden type sole, so for protection I bought a couple of cheap rubber backed rugs at Wal-Mart. They don't slip around, and it's very quick to take them outside and shake the dirt out. I also picked up a rechargeable “Dust Buster” to finish the job. (I recharge with a cheap 300-watt inverter)

food for thought

Thanks for the insight, all of the Cats I looked at before buying this one had carpeting, and it seemed to dress it up a bit. Maybe a few throw rugs will do the trick.
