Does anyone know what the maximum weight capacity is for the factory installed motor mount on a 1981 H22? I can't identify mine as the label is unreadable but I do know from the former owner, that it came with the boat. Thanks, Pete

Motor Mount

I don't know the weight limit of it but I was wondering the same thing about our h23 and e-mailed Greg at hunter and he e-mailed back with that info. It would be good to know the weight instead of just horsepower as the new 4 strokes are heavier than the original 2 strokes that came on them. Rob Morton

Honda 5 hp/ 4 stroke/motor mount

I just installed a honda 5 hp 4 stroke on my hunter 22 and I am concerned about the strength of the original mount too. The engine weighs about 66 lbs, but the mount is really wobbly. It won't even stay in the up position unles I tie the release lever to the enging. I had the yard tech look at it and he said that the nylon bushings were worn. I am trying to figure out how to remove those two pivot bolts and slip in some new nylon washers and to it rigid again, but I haven't figured out how to handle those two springs that are under tension. Kind of like taking apart a rat trap. I am also looking at a new mount but dread the thought of crawling down into the stern bottom area. Looks tight. I am going to try an access it tomorrow to see if I can reach the the four bolts that have a wood backing place.

Motor Mount Access Plate

Jim W, if your H22 is like mine there is an access plate for the motor mount. The access plate is at the aft end of the fuel tank locker. I was able to remove the motor mount by myself by reaching over the transom with one arm and inside the access plate with the other hand to unbolt the motor mount. I tied the mount off with a piece of line just in case.

I hope you're right

Great. I will look tomorrow. But I was just in there to put my fuel container there and did not notice any access panel. I will look again. I guess I could cut one out? Thanks

An educated guess

I've contacted dozens of people to determine the weight capacity of the original H22 motor mount, including Hunter. The best info I now have is that the H22 was factory spec'd for a 7.5 HP outboard. If anyone knows what an average 7.5 2 stroke, vintage early 80's weighs, we could then have a better idea what motor we can mount on it.

Add Support to the transom

I have a Honda 5hp 4stroke on the original swingup motor bracket on my H22. I added two 1"by4"by24" boards on the inside of the transom for added support. Then, using longer bolts, bolted the bracket to the transom, then through the wood. I also used extra large washers. It seems to hold very well. With the extra support the transom can't bow in or out. I also keep the motor on the bracket when I am trailering it, I just secure the bracket in the "up" position and secure it to a eye bolt that I have coming out near the top of the transom. I think that my 5hp 4stroke probably weighs about the same as a 7.5hp 2stroke,that the owner's manual says is the right motor for the boat. Mark

This response is for Jim W

I just replaced the motor mount on my H23, I had the same one you have. The problem with that one is how narrow the mounting is on the boat. Mine was in perfect condition and was still to wiggly. The four arms that go out to the engine mounting board are spaced WAY to close to each other. You can see the top two in your picture. That's why the thing is so wiggly, bad design in the first place. If yours is in need of repair then it's a no brainer. Do yourself a favor and pitch that thing in the trash and replace it with a new one. I bought a stainless steel Garelick from West Marine, wider design and much more stout.

Motor mount travel

Thanks. I do have an access port in the stern cockpit fuel closet so replacing it should be easy. I agree, replacing it is a no brainer. I have a new engine and would be dumb to lose it because of a bad mount. Does anyone know how much travel I should have for a 20 inch shaft? I a looking at one on ebay and it has 10 inch travel. Is that enough? I guess I should measure mine. I would like the prop deeper if I could could get it down there.

New Mount

Let us know what motor mount you end up with and how well it works on an H22.

So far Cabela is the winner for motor mount. Still checking though and need to determing vertical travel of mine.

Jim W, That's the same motor mount that I bought.

Hey Jim W, that's the same motor mount that I bought and it's $35.00 cheaper than West Marine. 11&1/2 inches of travel should be plenty for your motor. You should be able to use two of the existing holes in the transon from the old mount. Be sure to fill the other two with epoxy. If your still worried about getting your motor deeper, than you could always fill all four holes and mount the new one a little lower.

Ordered one today

I got the one from Cabela. My current travel is around 10 inches and the new one is 11+. I just hope I can use some of the holes. Is marine Tex ok to use to plug the old ones ?

This is for Hunter 23

I just noticed that the product description says it is not for four stroke engines because of the torque. Why would the torque be different on a 5 hp 2 stroke and 5 hp four stroke. I understand the weight difference. Do you have a four stroke? Or is this one of those attempts to get you buy a more expensive mount for a four stroke. If I had a 20 hp engine I could maybe see their point.
