Looks like some kind of self-tacking, maybe rigid foil kind of rig.

The sails are furled inside the yardarms, or removed.... and the yards have been squared in a most unusual way... That is an extremely modern square rigger....

Oops.. just viewed the link... sv Maltese Falcon... the sails roll towards the center into the masts.. That vessel is beyond imagination...

My first thought, was yes please! But then I got thinking... every time you wanted to unfurl those suckers and get some wind on, you'd have to prep 300 feet of vessel for it, locking down silverware, plates, glassware, etc. All that would be great at anchor or under motor, but the heeling might make it hard to sit down and eat, which would be a shame because that really should be under sail most of the time!

The Maltese Falcon built by Perini Navi in Tuzla, Turkey is a ship-rigged sailing luxury yacht, commissioned and formerly owned by American venture capitalist Tom Perkins.[2] It is one of the largest privately owned sailing yachts in the world at 88 m (289 ft), similar to Royal Huisman's Athena and Lürssen's Eos. The yacht was sold in 2009 to Elena Ambrosiadou the founder of IKOS Ltd., the Cyprus-based hedge fund.

Pretty sure someone else is doing all that for you, Charlz. Pass the caviar please, old boy.

I came across Perini Navi about 10 years ago. They began in 1983 in Viareggio, Italy.

Their designs are of a modern-minimalist in nature with luxuries in mind. Their designs are breathtaking. Peruse their web site & check out what they are doing in both power & sail.
Unlike any other yacht builders today. One of their yachts was used in the movie "The Island".

I believe the whole rig is run by computer. You wanna tack- hit the tack button. The compter turns the boat and adjusts sails... and passes the caviar, no doubt.

You can charter it for around $480 000 off season. To $529 000 peak season.
Those #'s are US $. Per week.
I'll stick with chartering MacGregors for now.

Does the $50/minute rate include crew and supplies? I'm thinking of a 10 minute off season charter. Oh yes. And when does the clock start running?

Perkins didn't keep it very long. Has anyone heard if it was a disappointment? Or was he more interested in its creation, than in luxuriating on a yacht. Too bad. Money is wasted on the rich.

meh...now the payments are a tax write-off for the owner.;)

Owner "rents" it to friends. Owner kicks back some business their way.

It's rigged in such a way, you can actually single hand it...

There is a great video of someone in an older 36-40ft sailboat tried to tack in front of them out in SF bay, but the guy somehow didn't realize they were doing 22kts under sail in a nearly 300ft boat, and instead he broadsided them and nearly sank his own boat. Scratched the hand rail on MF, that's about it.

When Tom Perkins owned it, he sailed the CRAP out of it. Raced it as well, where it owns many point-to-point speed records. Anyway, in a decent breeze its much faster under sail than motor anyway.

So the concept was proved and it was successful. I haven't seen any trickle down.
