I have a 40 year old sailboat and recently painted the cockpit sole with Rust-Oleum Marine Topside Paint - Gloss Sand Beige. It looks nice but want to know if others think gloss is OK for the rest of the deck non skid areas? They apparently only have semi gloss in white. Any opinions are appreciated. I am hopeful glossy non skid areas wont look bad against the flat white of the smooth surfaces on the deck but would like to hear what others think.

I've used the Rustoleum Topside and was quite impressed, it's certainly the best bang for the buck at $11.50 a quart. They apparently don't offer a flattening agent, but some non skid compound mixed into the paint will kill the gloss somewhat and give a good grippy finish. I prefer the Interlux non skid as it's a plastic bead material that stays mixed in the wet paint better. The other compounds I've tried were like fine sand and you have to continually stir it or it sinks to the bottom of the container. There don't appear to be any compatibility issues with this kind of additive between brands.

Thank you for your reply. I thought it was easy to apply and looked good. I was just worried that a gloss finish is not typically used on the non skid areas. It would certainly look better than it is now but don't want to ruin a fine old '75 Cal 27 with the wrong finish.

Yes it does look great! Thanks much for sharing the pics. Nice job. I feel better. I was worried no one would use the gloss on non skid having never painted a boat myself before. Cheers to a job well done!

I am just about finished painting my first boat (Kells 23 cb), and used rustoleum with the interlux non skid additive. It worked great and the paint looks very good.
White deck with the non skid areas painted in the sand beige. The rustoleum was a great option, as I did not want to spend too much on what is basically a cheapo boat!

Has anyone had it on for say 3 to5 years? How does it hold up? Any paint might look good when first applied. Just wondering I need to do some painting on my boat
I painted the back of the cabin outside and it has faded from gloss to semi gloss over the last 3-4 years. No chalking yet. It probably needs to be waxed/buffed regularly to keep it's luster and last.
Well since no one else is talking in this thread I’ll just say I ordered my paint. Should be here today. I’ll be prepping deck tonight and tape down in the morning and prime spots and paint all day tomorrow. Hopefully by the end of the day Saturday I’ll know something.

Thanks! I’ll share pictures once done. I’m really excited. My biggest fear is mixing the stuff that begins with a P in the paint. I’ve never done that before. I’m worried I’ll either mix too much or too little.
I have used Rustoleum topside in my cabin area about 5 years ago, it's holding up great. But it is out of the elements.
I guess the prep work is the most important part.

Well started at 9 am taping up and finished at 7 pm. I decided to leave it white. It looked so nice I was worried I’d wreck it. I figure I can always paint the blue a different time.
