Anyone out there have experience with a Campbell Sailor fixed pitch 3 blade prop? I'm thinking of buying one to replace my Michigan Wheel 3 blade on my H34. I've searched the forum archives, but would like more info on how well it performs. Have any H34 owners had the 15x9x1 repitched to a say 15x8x1 to get higher engine revs at cruise? Appreciate any info! JoeO

Expensive for what you are going to get.

Joe: Before you go off and do that, talk to Bob Kilian at Bay Props 510/337-9122. Discuss with him why you want to change and see what he suggests.

Great

Michigan Wheel was our primary supplier but we special ordered the Campbells because we never could get the others to perform as well. Pricing for the Campbell on the internet is in Canadian Dollars and doesn't seem excessive if you order direct..

One Satisfied Customer

Joe, I switched from a 2 blade OEM to a 3 blade Campbell Sailor about two years ago. I have been pretty well satisfied. I can sail as fast as before and there is a slight improvement in motoring particularly in the 2700 to 3000 RPM range. The Campbell Sailor is a small blade area propellor and this is the reason for the lower drag (compared to say a Mich. Sailor). It appears to load the engine up faster in the cruising range so I believe it is a better deal. Engines propped according to the Mfg recomendations are just loafing at cruising because of the micmatch between propellor curve and engine curve. For equivalent loading the sizes for the Campbell are considerably smaller, but the recommendations from the importer were right on the mark. I still top out at 3500 RPM as before.

I spoke with Bob this morning. He machined the no-slip tips about 18 months ago on my present prop (which I think is causing vibration). I'm having him take another look at my prop to see if there's a geometry problem. By the way...he said he represented Campbell Sailor props when Kilian Propellers was in business and he found that 4 out of 5 customers didn't like the performance.

3 blade

I changed my stock 2 blade to a cambell 3 blade about a year or so ago. The three blade is much smoother than the two, seems to stop and back a little better. I'm not sure if its slowed me down sailing or not. The reccomendation from Cambell turned out to not have enough pitch so I had to return the prop and get one with more pitch. This cost me some dollars as Im in Houston and they are in Canada. I did not get a full refund for the first prop either since it was on my boat for one week. At least the Diver made some money that month. I would have liked to seen a full refund on the first prop since they assured me it would be the right prop for my boat. I could turn 3600 plus rpms with the reccomended prop and still not achieve hull speed. The prop I did end up with allows me to turn about 3300 rpms and allows for better motoring at about 2800 rpms. The original 2 blade I could turn at 3600 plus rpms also. My boat is a 94 model 33.5 with the 3GM 27 hp yanmar. Same as your 336. Moral to the story, pick your prop carefully, and Cambell may not know best.
