I am thinking of getting a Campbell Sailor 3 blade for my CS27 (27 foot sloop, 6,100 pounds, Yanmar YSE8 8hp diesel) to replace the 2 blade fixed prop. According to their web site the Campbell will eliminate my prop walk in reverse, give me a higher cruising speed at lower rpm (currently I get a max of 5 nmph on flat water), and generally run smoother due to the 3 blade being less affected by turbulence from the keel. If you have a Campbell I would appreciate your feedback. Thanks, Kevin Bennett Toronto

Campbell Sailer Props

Everything they say is true. I have had mine for almost a year now, and it is wonderful. The archives on this site have more information on this subject. Please take the time to get the engine, shaft, and transmission information for your boat to make sure that the prop is made correctly. Good luck!

When I worked for a prop shop I sold myself a Michigan 3 Blade Sailor because of the low cost. It performs well but not as good as a Campbell. I don't own a Campbell but have been on boats before and after the Campbell installation and they performed the way it was claimed.

No Free Lunch

Kevin, I put a Campbell sailor on my Hunter 30 almost three year ago to replace the standard 2 blade. I offer the following observations: The sizing offered by North by Northwest was right on. My 2gm20 still turns 3500 with the prop and the bottom clean. I did not find much difference in vibration, but the Campbell is slightly smoother. The hull resonances still exist at the same RPM. The sailing drag is comparable to the original 2 blade but so is the blade area, and sailing drag is pretty well ralated to blade area (the Campbell is a small prop). I motor a little faster and a little harder into a head wind (.25 knot) but nothing earthshaking. Prop still walks to port in reverse. All in all I think the prop is a good buy if you want a slight increase in motoring with minimal effect on sailing. If your aim is to make a motoring machine then you might look at the Michigan Sailor or a standard Michigan 3 blade but you will pay the price in sailing performance.

I had the same experience as Frank

A few years back I replaced the standard two blade on my 1980 Hunter 30 with a Campbell 3 blade. They helped me tweek the pitch to get better performance out of my Yanmar 2QM15 and I am happy with the better speed and power. My boat still backs to port in reverse.

Campbell Sailors must be good

I don't have direct experience with the CS prop, but I can tell you from being on this board since it first started, that I cannot remember anyone ever saying anything negative about Campbell Sailor props - for what that is worth.

Frank, what drove you to buy the CS?

Frank, Were you expecting to get better motoring speed with the CS prop, or were you buying a new prop for other reasons? It seems most CS27s can't reach hull speed (approx. 6.5 knots) with the factory prop (2 blade 13X8) and 8 hp Yanmar diesel. At 5 knots I appear to get better performance than what some owners report. Based on your experience I am wondering if the CS provides the best performance increase where the boat is already underproped or underpowered. Kevin

campbell prop

I had terrible luck with the pitch on a Campbell I bought to replace the 2 blade Michigan for my 32 foot boat with a volvo 2002 (nomimally 18 h.p.) Couldn't turn anywhere near the rpms I needed, and despite Campbell's "warranty" that the size and pitch would be acceptable for the boat I had to repitch at my expense and it still didn't work right. Campbell's service afterwards was terrible, and since the agent is in Canada there is no cost effective remedy. They just disregard emails. I've since pulled the prop off the boat permanently and have gone back to the Michigan. It's a long story and very expensive to pull the boat several times for the initial installation; re-pitching to the maximum permissible and re-installing; and then replacing with the Michigan when the Campbell wouldn't spin fast enough. I'm very unhappy with the after the sale service from these guys. If the prop doesn't perform, neither do they. Anyone want a 1" shaft 3 blade Cambell, now re-pitched to 14 x 6.5 (originally 9.5)? Price reduced from original cost and probably only has 10 hours on it.
