Ken, I had the same problem and never did figure out how to stop the deterioration. Now I have a type 1 linear drive, so no more bad boot.

Try Meguiar's vinyl and rubber cleaner. It's worth a try even if the rubber has already started to deteriorate.
I've used this cleaner on rubber snaps and everything else that doesn't move on the boat. Where it really works is the vinyl rub rail around the boat. Could pass for new after 14 years and very easy to clean after a long winter.

The sunlight is probably breaking it down. A lightproof cover would help. Maybe make one out of a piece of bimini fabric.
Another product that I have used with a lot of success is Woody Wax. Lots of uses including plastic parts (not eisenglass) metal and non skid.
Yep, common issue after only short term use. They will warranty it but more than likely you'll need to remove the entire drive wire to put a new boot on and It might not be worth if it's going to fail as the first one always does.
Now why didn't I think of that??! Great idea Allan. I'm handy with sewing machine and have small pieces of Sunbrella. I'll still clean it then wrap it up.
Yah, removing the boot is a pain. I've to pull the cable out through a pack pipe(hand hold).
