I crew on a C30 for week night races. We all ways do well against the competition to weather. We always seem to be able to point better. But when the downwind portion of the race comes we fall behind. Our competition is two pierson 30's. They have the same PHRF rateing, but being narrower and lighter with about the same sail area they catch us down wind. Our boat has good sails, a 110 jib with a whisker pole, and a standard main with a rope vang. Any one out there have any suggestions to better handle the setup we have? Thanks Mark

Downwind

Make sure that the backstay is released!!!!Also, move all crew aft as far as possible. Loosed the jib and main halyard (Play with this one until you speed indicator gives best result)...Get a spinnaker..Move main forward until the boom almost touches the stays. Play windshifts to the max. Good luck...

Check out Don's pubs

Go to the link below. At the bottom of the page are links to Don's sail trim chart and user's guide. They are very informative and well worth the little money he charges.

We race a 77 Catalina and we have a 157 mylar hdsl that costs us 2 seconds a mile on our standard rating but is well worth the 2 seconds! This boat needs big sails to better downwind. Try a folding prop as well thats what we did and it made a BIG difference.
