Something strange is going on here. I have full throttle range of motion and response while in neutral, BUT, just recently, when in forward gear, I still have full throttle range of motion but very little response from the engine. The cable linkage is sound and moves the arm on the side of the carbuerator the same as when in neutral, but I'm only able to get maybe 800-900 rpm from the engine. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

check your compression

I pulled out of the slip one day in reverse with no problems. Then I went into forward and there was almost nothing. In neutral the throttle would rev the engine, but not forward. Basically the reduction gear in reverse allows slippage so the load is not much. In forward you are locked in place with full load and if the engine is not putting out the RPMs you will notice it more. I had very low compression on two cylinders (blown head gasket) and one had a broken exhaust vlave spring. Your compression should be near 100 PSI and fairly equal over all cylinders.

Fouled prop

One morning I was getting under way and backing out of my slip, the same thing happened to me. I was taking my boat to a shipyard for a haulout and I had very little power when in gear (forward or reverse) but plenty of RPMs in neutral. There happened to be a hull cleaner cleaning a boat right next to me and along with a couple of other fellows who were in swim trunks with mask and fins jumped right in to check things out. Turns out that the prop shaft and prop were pretty fouled up, I dont know if it was friction from the extra growth on the prop that kept it from turning as easy as normal or something else but I just had the hull cleaner scrape it all off and I was on my way with no problems. The difference in power was like night and day. The boat had been in its slip prior to this event with no activity for a month and definitely needed to be hauled. I read on a website (I can't remember which one) that you should be able to paint the prop with antifouling paint to stop marine organism buildup but I dont know how much this may affect things like prop balance etc. Hope this helps.

Thanks

Thanks Guys, I really appreciate the feedback. Hopefully it's the fouled prop, but with my luck . . . I'll know for sure, however, after haul out. Thanks again, thomas
