What kind of modification and upgrades would be needed to prepare a standard 1979 Catalina 30 for an offshore excursion to the Hawaiian islands? ( the minimum and the ideal, please).
I have read many books about what would be required for a lenghty stay at sea. One of the best I found was Lynn and Larry Parday's "Champagne Cruising on a Beer Budget". This couple has cruised most of the worlds oceans and seas. The book gives you an idea of what should be stored aboard for ocean crossings and gets you away from all the nice to have little gadgets that can break while at sea. Cruising the world for more than 30 years I think, ranks them amoung the most experianced sailors today. Hope this helps you out. Oh by the way, thier first boat Larry built was only 24 feet long (Lyle Hess design) and the second boat they are cruising on is only 29 feet long.
Find a good surveyor. Check the rigging, sails, batteries, water capacity, thru hulls, saftey equpment, sails, whisker poll or spinnaker pole, for down wind sailing 2 GPS's, short wave radio, etc.....I did meet a sailor about 3 years ago that made the sail to Hawaii I believe twice on a Cat 30 and to Cabo and back.
