Hi Guys, OK, I have just gone sailing over the weekend with my newly rebuilt internal outhaul system. The problem I am having is that the Catalina outhaul car does not slide very well at all in the slot at the top of the boom. I can pull the car back with the outhaul but the car tends to bind in the track when I release the outhaul sheet. The wind pressure against the car at the clew connection seems to wedge the car at an angle in the slot. I have the solid aluminum car, about 2-3" long with a pin for the outhaul line and the sail clew. I noticed the problem also existed prior to my rebuilding. Any suggestions on how to fix? Is this a typical problem for this design? Has anyone replaced with a boom mounted track and ball bearing traveler car???? Thanks, Paul #1828

Use a shackle?

How about taking off the car completely and using a shackle at the end of the outhaul? For a nominal fee your sailmaker could replace the slug at the clew with a sturdy metal one, and you wouldn't have to worry about a binding car. Good Luck.
