I have ordered a new main and while I am waiting for it to arrive, I would like to upgrade the outhaul. Have any of you reworked the stock C30 outhaul to give you more purchase, or improved ease of use? Any opinions out there as to whether or not the outhaul control should be lead to the cockpit or not?

Outhaul

Rick Try these references from the C34 website, should be same arrangement. You can double your purchase with an exterior block and line. http://c34.infopop.cc/6/ubb.x?a=srch&s=329609511&findw=outhaul http://c34.infopop.cc/6/ubb.x?a=tpc&s=329609511&f=829605811&m=401600911&r=411600911#411600911 Stu

Outhaul

I just did mine over the winter. You will have to take the boom home to work on it. The hardest part is the removal of the stainless sheet metal screws on the end caps which are probably seized as mine were. I retapped and installed stainless bolts with antiseize paste incase I have to get inside again.

Another Thought

Rick, Another thought re the outhaul. If you haven't done so already, get rid of the 'car' that rides in the slot at the end of the boom. I found mine to be nothing but trouble, jamming all the time. I lead the outhaul directly to the clew of the sail, and had my sailmaker attach a metal slug near the clew. With a 4:1 or 6:1 purchase on the outhaul as described below, you will have no problems.

Rick: Actually, no matter what you do with the internal system your still stuck with a poor performer. I did away with it all together and purchased 2 small Harken triple blocks (expensive little buggers). I attached one to the tang at the end of the boom and the other to the clew. I now have 6:1 purchase. The thing you want with that cheap aluminum car is a horizontal pulling motion, which I get with my system, instead of a downward pulling motion you get with the internal system that causes the aluminum car to dig into the boom. Even if you scape the aluminum car, your still not left with a lot of purchase. There is an even better setup than mine, which is to install a short piece of track at the end of the boom and install a ballbearing car on it. The problem is you either have to make an alteration to the foot of the sail or sail it loose footed.
